Do you wish it was different or do you like the arrangement you have? Yes, it works for us that way
Do you find that the one in control spends more? Yes, but only because I take care of getting the groceries and other household supplies, gifts when needed, clothes when needed, etc We only use the checkbook for the bills each month and then to pay off the 1 credit card we use thru-out the month-and even then, nearly all of that is actually done electronically. It is very rare forme to write an actual check.

Do you find that the one in control spends more? I'm the one spending more since I decide when and which bills to pay each week. The only thing DH does is sign the checks.

Who controls the checkbook in your family? We both do. There's no "control", we work together to make our budget and stay on track with things. IMO budgeting doesn't work very well if one person has control over everything, it really needs to be a joint effort.

Do you wish it was different or do you like the arrangement you have? Nope, I don't think we would have been nearly as successful as we have been without us both being actively involved in our budget, spending, etc.

Do you find that the one in control spends more? Nobody's in control and our spending is set forth on a spreadsheet, so what is spent is spent regardless of who does it. Most of our spending is food and then normal monthly bills anyway.

^^I don't think that was the kind of control meant.

Just because one person is the primary bill payer (as in writing the checks) and shopping doesn't mean the other person isn't on the same page with how much is spent overall. My husband has more important work things to worry about than if I spent $15.02 or $15.03 at the store.

WEll our bills are set up on auto bill pay, so nobody pays those they pay by themselves each month. I do the grocery shopping, but only because hubby works nights and sleeps days and I work days and sleep nights so I can go at a decent time during the day (plus he hates grocery shopping and it doesn't bother me). So it's really a non issue for us. I work full time too as an employee at a company plus then I work part time running my own business, so I have just as many important things to deal with as he does, therefore we're equal when it comes to our money and we do our budget each month together. So my answer remains the same...neither of us control anything, we're equal in "control".

I am sorry I didn't realize we were being literal. Nobody has "control" of our checkbook, we don't have one. what I do have is a few envelopes with what the cash is for writen on the outside. I do sit down and do the budget on a spread sheet, then go over it with DH. I cash the check as it is in my name. Then I sort the money out into the envelopes and hand DH whatever money or envelope he needs, other wise they are in my purse/lock box.
