What do you think of him? I just bought his book "The Total Money Makeover," but was just wondering what you all thought about him?

DH and I like him so much we're teaching Financial Peace University for the second time! We have followed his advice and it has been a TREMENDOUS BLESSING in our lives! I'll post more later when I have some time.

People here talk about him all the time. I haven't read his book personally, but really... I've NEVER heard anything bad about it.

"The Total Money Makeover" changed our lives!!!! I can't recommend it enough. It was hard at first, but it's such a freeing feeling to pay cash for everything, and to live like no one else knowing that someday, we will live like no one else Right now, we're saving up for a new (used) minivan. We're gonna pay cash for it, and I'm so excited.

Brief personal testimonial (Dave's all about testimonials!)--DH and I started listening in 1999. In about April 2000 we got serious, and got rid of all our debt (I'm talking about $100,000+ in credit cards, personal loans and two pieces of property). It took about 3 years, but it was the best thing we ever did. We paid cash for 2 very nice vehicles in 2004/2005 and in 2005, since we have no payments to make, DH was able to leave his average-paying job and start his own business, which has been extremely successful. If we had been saddled with debt we would never have been able to make that leap.

I recommend Dave to anyone and everyone I meet. His plan really works, if someone is willing to follow it!

I wish I had the time to go to a Financial Peace university, but I'm glad to hear all the good reviews. I've read a few chapters already and really think it could completely change the way we live, but getting DH on board might be a problem.

Didn't he come up with the envelope system that ya'll talk about? I haven't come across it yet in the book, but I was thinking that's who it was?

I don't know that he came up with it. It's been around since my grandmother's day . But he does recommend using it and goes into detail about how to implement it. I use it and LOVE it!

In FPU he shows an old "envelope system" that a listener sent him from the 1940's. It was very neat--I don't know if it was his inspiration or not, but the envelope system that you get in the FPU kit does look a lot like it.

About your DH--I thought that my DH wouldn't get on board either. I thought he would never listen to some guy on the radio for financial advice. I was SO WRONG!! He listened to the show about 2 times and then he said "When are we going to cut our credit cards up? Let's do it right now!" I was amazed! Try to get your DH to listen--the show is available on the internet on his website if you can't listen during the day. It is a great show with lots of great advice and questions/stories from the callers. There's a good chance if he listens he'll get hooked!

I got the book on CD so dh could listen to it on his way to/from work. There's no way he would have ever read the book!

I've wanted to read/use the Dave Ramsey system for a long time, but I can never convince myself to cough up the $200 or whatever it costs to get started. I've heard over and over again that it works, but when we live so close to broke (and more often than not, totally broke), I don't know that I can ever come up with the money. :-(

I just bought The Total Money Makeover on CD for around $20. I didn't buy anything else. You can do it on your own without the $200 package.

It doesn't cost anything to follow his plan--you can check his books out from the library, and the radio show is always free, even if you listen on the Internet.

Also, check his website out and see if FPU is taught at any of your local churches. The price charged to people who enroll through a church is sometimes cheaper than it is for the general public. Plus, in our last class, we took up a collection to help people enroll in the next class, and one lady even paid the entire cost for someone else to attend. So you might find something like that available at a church in your area. It never hurts to ask. One more thing to consider--you get a free kit for agreeing to lead a class-that's what DH and I did.
