When was your child first diagnosed with ADHD or ADD? How old were they?

And what were some of the signs???

I have a 4 year old daughter and her biological father had eiher add or adhd and is bi-polar and I am seeing some things in her that are scaring me,I plan on bringing up th subject with her ped. this morning when we go to her appt.

Any advice would be awesome and much needed!

what kinds of things are you noticing?

Tyler was diagnosed when he was 5, Austin when he was 6.
Tyler was more obvious, getting kicked out of school in kindergarden, moving around all the time, just really VERY actice.
Austin was more the ADD and not ADHD, very naughty, talks back and just wouldn't sit still.
How did the appt go?

She is very naughty and has no accord for anything or anyone??? She does not listen and I am not just talking the normal not listening of a 4 year old,she is always going and bouncing, and does not stop, and get's very distracted will start one thing and then go on to the next because she seems to get really bored and very easily, like there are not enough things in the day for her and at night she is not tired like there has been nights where she will stay up til 1am ughh......

I talked to the doctor but she is only the NP and did not seem very concerned since she is not in school yet,but I know people on here have kids that were diagnosed as early as 2!

She has her well child visit in February and we will hopefully be seeing her normal pediatrician and I can talk to her further about this....

So as far as right now go,I have talked to her teacher and I have asked her to give me weekly progress reports, just to see how she is doing in preschool and what not....

It has been many years, but I looked through my sons medical folder when he was diagnosed. The first start was the conners testing that his teachers and myself had to fill out. It is list of questions and then the answers are looked at by the doctor. Then he had to go to a psych. and she talked to him over several visits and he had to do an extensive test on the computer to rate for attention span and IQ levels. Then I had to go to his school with all of the findings and meet with the school psych. The whole process took over 6 months and then the decision to put him on meds took me another 3+ months.

I babbled, but I would start with asking your doctor for a copy of the conners testing and have his preschool teacher(s) fill it out.

What I would try not to do with her is yell at her... and let me tell you I know how hard and frustrating it is to raise and ADHD child! The doctors all taught me that positive rewards vs. negative punishment works better with them. They are usually very loving children and want to please. I remember when they were young when they would get out of control I would hold them and hug them tight and let them fight me but not speak at all. It calmed them down so much.... They thrive on routein and any variance from the norm can sometimes make them crazy.

Try reading this article on behaviour modification. I thought it was crazy at first but when I saw the change in the boys and a little sanity return to my life I was thankful I tried it!

Behavior Modification for ADHD
