I've had a few tornadic experiences in my life. First was when was 9 or 10 and living on my parents' farm. It was around 9:00 p.m. and stormy and the wind really picked up. Didn't realize it at the time but a tornado... probably F2 passed within a quarter mile of our house.
Then about a week after we moved in the house we are in now, my DH woke me up around 2:00 a.m. to tell me the tornado sirens were going off. He earlier was woken up by hearing the sound of a train. We went right down to the basement. Turns out that by the time the sirens went off the tornado had already passed. A house exactly one block to the south of us had some pretty significant damage -- their deck went through their bedroom. Amazingly the chairs on our deck didn't even move - and they were plastic! We were very lucky.
We had a hurricane come right up through the harbor here a few years back. It was a total mess! Luckily our house only had minor roof damage and the screen enclosing the pool caved in, but some of our neighbors had to have their houses gutted because their roofs got ripped off and everything inside got destroyed by the water. We had no electricity for over a week afterward. It SUCKED!!!!!! And we had a "mobile home village" for a couple years to house everyone that lost their homes.
I've had run-ins with Earthquakes when I was in the military stationed in Japan. None of them were large...just little tremor here and there. Still on a 3-4 scale though.
I live on he east coast in the US. So...we get hurricanes often. And I've dealt with flooding from those hurricanes as well.
Tornados....I've never been PERSONALLY effected by them, but they've gotten as close to 3 miles from my house. We actually had an F5 come through several years ago that did quite a bit of damage in the area. Our house was not effected though. My husband and I actually sat outside on our deck watching the clouds...it was pretty wicked!
