Someone told me the other day that a new law had been passed saying you can't have a scheduled c-section until 39 weeks. Is that an actual *law* or is it just what the ob/gyn folks came up with... and is it set in stone? We'd already discussed my next one being 37/38 weeks to prevent another squished baby and years of therapy. As long as he/she is healthy, what's the big deal? It's not like I don't understand the risks. Ben came at 40 wks and was just WAY too big for my body... in more ways than one. That's why he's been in therapy since he was born.
Its not a law but a rule of thumb. Mostly its because they want to make sure the lungs are developed enough and because there is always some leeway in the due date and the development of the child. By waiting until 39 weeks at a "rule" then they know the baby is cooked and ready to come out of the oven.
Obs can do c/s earlier if indications call for it. Could be previous history of large babies, complications etc.
it's not a law, just a general idea.i'm delivering at 38 weeks and 3 days.my dr likes to do a planned c-section 7-10 days before the due date depending on which is more convenient for mom and dr.for certain situations of course it's exceptable but if it's just because it's a repeat c-section ,they'll try to wait til as close to the due date as possible.
My doctor had a fit because we had to schedule it 1 day before 39 weeks. She said they never schedule them before that. I was really suprised to find my son was a whole pound smaller than my whopper of a daughter was! I did not think 1 week would make that big of a difference but I guess it does!

My oldest (both girls) was 10 days late. She was 6 lb 12 oz. My youngest came 10 days early & was 8 lb 12 oz. So you never know. They were both 21 in. long
My first came after a long, hard labor at 41 weeks, 6 days (ARGHHH!). He was 9 lbs. 5 oz. With my daughter they allowed me to schedule the C 10 days before the due date and she was 8 lbs. 3 oz. When I had my 3rd, I thought they'd let me do the same, as they suspected he was a big baby, but they said they no longer do them before 39 weeks unless there's complications. So I was scheduled to have him 3 days early. He was 10 lbs. 6 oz.! and 22 3/4". WHEW... I'm glad he was a scheduled C!!!

When i had my son 3yrs ago i had him at 37weeks which i was happy with as my son weighed in at 9lbs 13oz but when i had my daughter in April i had a new doctor who refused to do the c-section before 39 weeks and im glad now as my little girl only weighed 7lbs 14oz and would of been less than that if born any earlier so just because you have a big baby first time round does not mean second time you will.
I had a failed external version for a breech baby at 38 weeks 5 days with my son. We had our bags packed and with us just in case something happened and I had to have an emergency c/s. The docs (my family doc/gyn and the ob/surgeon) decided that they had to wait until 39 weeks. I had him one week later.
We moved, so I now have a new ob/gyn/family doc. He said he delivers sometime between 38 and 39 weeks. So, who knows?!?
I haven't heard that it's a law, but it's definitely a general rule of thumb, unless there's complications or other reasons to schedule for earlier than 39 weeks. My daughter was born at 37w5d by scheduled c-section, but only because I had pre-eclampsia and since she was breech, they didn't want me going into labor again (I went into PTL 3 times) only to have to have an emergency section.
The hospital I had both my girls at won't do scheduled c-sections less than 38 weeks. So I had Alexa on exactly 38 weeks -- my doctor came in on a Saturday to do it just so I could have her as early as possible. Since then, my doctor has changed hospitals so she doesn't have to go with such stringent requirements, and she can make the decision based on the safety of mother & child, not the "rules".

I haven't heard whether it's a law around here or not - I have heard of one doctor here in town who tries to do all c-sections at 38 weeks no matter what, but I'm not sure why.
