Well I'm curious to know what everyone's opinion of a large family is. DH and I are TTC #4, and this will be our last. IMO 4 is larger than typical but still in the range of sanity. Some of our friends with only 1 or 2 kids think we've lost our minds but I can't understand why they only wanted 1 kid any more than they can understand why I want 4.
So in today's society where people no longer have 10+ kids to work the farm, what IS large?
My definition of large is 6 or more, and that would just be so fun.
Have a great weekend!

Where I live any number above 3 is a large family, they think I'm nuts for wanting a 6th. IMO if you can provide for them and can keep up with them, the more the merrier! Kids are a blessing.

I think 4 or more is a big family. I think that what is big also depends on your own situation. For me as a single mom I think 4 is a huge family. If I was married and in a better financial place, and didn't need to do IVF I would be trying for 5 or 6 kids.

Hi all I am new here but wanted to pop in as the mom to six kiddos that I think 4 or more is considered large, however like some others have mentioned, nowadays 3 seems to be large for many. I also think large families are wonderful. Not always easy (or quiet!) LOL and it can be challenging to find mommy & daddy quiet time once you have teenagers running around, but teens also make great babysitters! Years ago large families were more typical. I encourage it if you are up to it, it feels wonderful to have such a clan!

Considering most of the people we know have 1 or 2 children (a couple have 3), i'd have to say 4-5 is a large family...I think that I am the only one in the group of people we know (one of the very very few at my kids school) to have 4 kids...I haven't even told anyone that I want to go for 5, who knows what people will say lol...I think i'd rather just shock everyone lol

I think that alot of people think 2 kids is perfect, anything more is big.
Having 4 and hopefully another or 2 , I think big is 6 kids or more.
With what we have now, I don't look at us like a big family..Maybe because it's so right and normal to me?

I have 3 and am praying really hard for #4 and #5. With me being 40, I don't know how much time I have left. But we are trying!

Hi~ I'm just a lurker here. I come from a family of 5 kids and I never considered us a big family at all. (We were pretty spread out, though... the oldest was 15 when the youngest was born).
DH and I just had our 1st child in January, but we are hoping for 6 kids eventually. I would consider anything over 6 a "large" family, but I know that society as a whole considers anything over 3 pretty big, so I guess it's just a matter of opinion/ perception. I do think when the siblings are more closely spaced, it makes the family seem "bigger" somehow. My cousin had 5 kids in 7 years and it does seem like she has a "ton" of kids. My mom had 5 kids in 15 years and it didn't really ever seem that way to me. I would like them closer together though! I know it will be tough, but I'm game!

I'm a lurker too. I think 4 is a larger family. I'm currently expecting our 4th (#2, one of our twins passed away at 9 months old) so with the 3 on earth, I think we'll still qualify as average. Most of my friends have 3 children. I plan to have one more. We got a late starte, just months after my 29th birthday, and we'd said we'd stop when I'm 35. I think I can squeeze one more in before that.

So far the reaction from our families has been great. My mom sighed and said, but this is such a long drive- because I live in VA, and they in AL. They travel alot, and I know another grandchild is another they don't have in their lives everyday.
