I'm new to charting and I've been using Fertility Friend. Since I've started, it seems more often than not, the plotted temps are circles rather than dots - indicating a possible inaccurate read. Why is this? Is that common?

I am temping with a normal thermometer (I can't find one with 2 decimals)? Could that make a big difference. At this point, we're not TTC and I actually want to use charting and such to as NFP, for now. Obviously we'd be ok if something happened, but I just want to avoid right now without hormonal BC since we may TTC soon. Here's my chart if that helps.

TIA!

The open circles mean the temp wasn't taken at the same time every day (whatever your default time is). For an accurate record, it's best to take the temp as close to the same time every day as possible. It might be difficult to track fertility with a regular thermometer, a BBT is recommended.

Secondly, FF is not very reliable for avoiding. It's designed for TTC and doesn't get into enough detail for avoiding purposes. It's also famous for false interpretations, which is obviously a big problem if you want to avoid pregnancy and FF tells you that ovulation has occurred when it hasn't yet!

Your best bet for charting to avoid via NFP is to use an actual NFP prgoram (there are lots to choose from) and have a solid understanding of the rules for avoiding pregnancy. Charting websites/software are helpful tools, but they shouldn't be used as substitutes for being able to interpret your chart yourself. There are lots of ways to learn to do that - home study courses, live classes, private coaching with a teacher, online courses, etc!

Hope that helps! Don't hesitate to stop by NFP/FAM if you have any more questions about charting to avoid.

Shawna is our resident expert! As for the thermometer, you can pick up a BBT at walmart, target or any drug store. You should be able to find them in the family planning section.

They're about $10 for a basic with memory. If you want a fancier one there are some that remember up to 10 temps and light up.
