I saw a commercial yesterday for a BCP that will only allow your body to have a period every three months. Now, I've heard before that some women skip the placebo pills and go straight to the next set of hormones, and my doctor told me this was okay as long as I let myself have a period every three months.

This just doesn't sound good to me. Why every three months? I just think that our bodies go through these cycles every month for a reason, and supressing them is just... strange. I guess it is more ethical than medical for me.

Yeah, I don't know about that, it seems strange that they would try to alter what mother nature has set.

I feel the same way about them, if we didn't need to get our periods every month then why are our bodies set up like that?

Although the pill may be good for those who get migraines. Since going off the pill in Sept 08 I have finally realized that the BCPs were my trigger, my ob/gyn from a few years ago said that the Seasonale BCP will keep your hormones from fluctuating as much as they do with normal BCP which could mean less migraines. My insurance at the time did not cover seasonale so I did not get to try it out.

I know I was on the birth control shot for a while and I did not have AF at all for a year. I did not mind not having one but I was off the shot for 3 years when I started TTC and it took k15 cycles and Clomid to get my BFP I really think it had to do with the shot.

I remember reading about this a long time back. I think they could stop your period forever using bcp from doing exactly what you said but they don't know the long term affects of doing that so they recommend having a cycle every three months. Honestly, I really don't think it is that crazy though to not have a regular period and I don't know that it would be bad for a woman. The reason I say this is because before bcp people were pregnant more often and went longer periods without having a period. My guess is that in actuality not having babies in itself is not something our bodies were made for. Does that makes sense?

The only thing I can think of is it slows down how long it takes lining to build up so you don't need one every month. I agree though that if we were designed to have it once a month then that's how it should be. There's just no way of knowing what the long term effects could be until it's too late.

I see what you are saying Patty, and that is why I think it is more ethical than medical for me. There might be no reason to have a period every month, from a medical standpoint, but that is the way the universe was designed KWIM? I totally understand and respect that a lot of women would be thrilled about being able to trick nature. If that option is available then they have the right to do so- it's their body; but it's just not for me.

When I was on NuvaRing I was told by my doctor and had read online that you can just replace the ring every month w/o the ring-free week and not have any periods and it was perfectly fine. I tried it and the first month, I started spotting with the ring in place. I was stubborn and wanted to try to keep AF away so I kept the ring in but continued spotting for about a week. I finally took it out and had an 8 day AF (was always 5 days before).

The next month I tried it again and was able to skip AF. The one after that, I started spotting around the time that AF would have been due, so I went ahead and took the ring out and had a normal AF. The next month, I was able to keep a ring in and skip AF.

Ultimately, I was able to skip every other AF. I'd just keep replacing the ring w/o a gap, and if I started spotting, I'd just take it out and let AF come. I kind of liked it that way.
