I'm new to charting this month. My dh and I started ttc in Feb. We got lucky the first cycle, but it ended in an m/c a couple of weeks later. I had my iud removed last November and I have not taken any BCP. I have 3 children from a previous marriage and I got pg with them within a couple months of trying (no charting or anything). So it has been a real disappointment not get pregnant as fast. I have been thinking about charting, but I am an obessesive person and thought it may make things worse for me. After being "late" 6 days this past cycle I decided that I want to know what's going on with my body.

The problem I have now is that I do not sleep well at all. I usually wake up several times during the night, therefore, making the whole good block of sleep hard to determine. Since I just got off AF I decided that whatever time I woke up first in the night would be my temp time. I woke up at 1:30 am. I had been asleep for about 3 hours. So, if I wake up every night around 1:30 and temp this should work? Right? I did go back to sleep and woke up about 4:30. Should I have temped then instead? I have tried taking sleeping aids to help with this insomnia, but nothing works. I am also watching cm and taking opk's twice a day until I can confirm O.

Does anyone else have problems sleeping and still have useful charts?

Thanks!
-Lemon

Hi Lemon! Welcome to the charting board. I think charting would be very helpful because you know when you ovulate so you aren't sitting around wondering what is going on when you get to the end of the month.

For your sleep question, you need to temp consistently at the same time and you need to be getting at least 3 hours sleep. May I ask if something is waking you up at night? Do you sleep poorly every night?

The important thing is that you get three hours of sleep. I don't think waking up for a second and then going right back to sleep messes up your chart that much (as long as you go right back to sleep and don't toss and turn). If you sleep from 1:30 to 4:30 and that is uninterrupted, I would just start temping at 4:30. You can write your temp down and go right back to sleep. Or if you get a thermometer that stores your temp you don't even have to write it down.

Thanks for the quick response!

Yes, I woke up at 130 then again at 430, but it felt like I hadn't been asleep at all. I do toss and turn alot. So normally I get a better block of sleep as soon as I go to sleep rather than later on when I wake up for the second or third time. I think I'm more or less "dozing" during those times.

As for your question about why I am waking up, I think it's because I have my mind set that I need to get up and temp. I think it's already stressing me out and making my sleep patterns off. I never sleep very well during AF, but then I usually get back to a normal schedule. I'm hoping that once I get used to temping then maybe next month I will have a better sleep pattern. I'm a very weird sleeper... lol... I have to have the clock turned away from me or I will wake up every hour to see what time it is and I can't have an alarm on or I will wake up every hour to avoid hearing the alarm. lol! We'll see where this charting take us!

Also, when I temped at 130 it was 97.60 and then after I woke up at 430 I dozed until 600 and took my temp then and it was 97.46.

Yes, thank goodness for BBT that will record temps!! That's what I got! All I can say is please let me get pregnant before I drive myself crazy with all this charting and whatnot!

Thanks again for your help!

I have VERY inconsistant sleep. I'm a night worker, so sometimes i temp in the morning, and sometimes in the afternoon. I pretty much temp whenever i happen to wake up (i usually wake once or twice before getting up) as long as i have had 3 hours of sleep. My charts have been very easy to read.... except this one..

I see. I had this exact same problem when I started charting. I think I would get anxious about temping and it would wake me up. Now, I don't do that so much. I try to make sure when I go to sleep I am really tired so I don't wake up at night.

I think you might want to set your temp time really early or in the middle of the night so that when you wake you are sound asleep. I find my chart is more accurate if the alarm wakes me from a dead sleep. Just pick a time and temp at that time consistently.

Hi there! I'm new to temping also, and I have a 16 month old, who doesn't allow me to sleep as much as I'd like. But the last time he gets up is at 5am, and wakes up at 8.30am, so i'm getting a good chunk, and I just make sure to take my temp at the same time every morning, and I have a smooth fluent chart
