Okay I saw you posted in another thread that you were going to try an at home insemination. I have been seriously thinking about doing this too. I don't know why it would help me. My problem is that I have one tube and it is clubbed so I don't even know that it would help because I don't even know that my egg is getting passed my faulty tube. But, I am still thinking about it because we have been at this for quite a while. I have always read that when they do IUI they have to wash the sperm first and that it is dangerous to put semen directly into your uterus because of the prostaglandins in them. I would also worry about introducing infection into your uterus with these methods. (I don't know how far past the cervix that you go with these things but I just worry about pushing things into the uterus that could cause infection.

Have you read anything about this? I am paranoid. I don't want to make myself sick or get some type of infection. Do you know anyone on JM that has tried this?

Edited: Nevermind I just reread the instructions. It doesn't look like they recommend introducing semen past the cervix. That answers my questions. I am going to read this some more.

Hi Patty
One of my best friends is a dr and she told me not to insert it too far. Just enough that the sperm won't come back out. She said if I go on my back with a few pillows under me while inserting and to stay there for at least a hlf hr.
I don't know anyone that has tried it but I'm also nervous about infection.
I will ask my friend about it and get back to you on it asap.

I think as long as you wash your hands and don't insert past the cervix you will probably be fine. When I first read this I thought they were recommending inserting directly into your cervix. This looks similar to using the Conception Kit so I think it would probably be effective. It doesn't sound dangerous if you do it the way they suggest. I hadn't read it completely when I posted my question. But, please share any advice you friend suggests.

Ok I rang my friend she said you don't insert it into the cervix you just deposit the sperm into the vagina.
She also said with the syringe she gave me that I wouldn't be able to place it past the cervix. Here is a link to the type of syringe she gave me.

They used to do it before with a tube at the end of the syringe so that it would be past the cervix but that is how it caused infection... But not anymore so if this dosen't work I'll be trying IUI so the can wash the sperm before it passes the cervix.
I hope this helps.
I'm CD7 we will maybe start trying it about CD10 so I'll let you know how I get on.
I also will be using preseed.

I hope I'm not being insensitive...just trying to understand. How is this any different than having sex? Maybe it ensures that the sperm are exactly where they need to be? As high up as possible?

I read the whole article that was posted and of course am willing to try anything, which is why I'm asking! But I wasn't sure if this would help me. After sex, I always prop myself up with a pillow, legs against the wall for as long as I can before everything falls asleep, lol.

Hi Lori
No your not being insensitive. It is very similar to having sex. But it just makes sure that the sperm is in the right place without dripping out.
A lot of times this is used when there is a problem such as in our case DH has delayed ejaculation which is the opposite to premature. He just seem to go on for ever and can not ejaculate while having sex (which was great when we weren't trying). Sorry if this is TMI but I wanted to explain that this is the reason we are trying it...

I looked up a few site's and found this info hope it answers some of your questions but please ask me if you want to know more.

In women:

Problems with the cervical mucus - there may not be enough mucus to allow sperm to move easily, or it may be too thick and sticky. Sometimes, the female partner's cervical mucus is not compatible with the male partner's sperm
Women with mild endometriosis (a condition in which the lining of the uterus can become attached to organs such as the fallopian tubes, preventing the passage of eggs)
Anatomical problems with the uterus or cervix, which prevents sperm finding the egg

In men:
Premature ejaculation
Retrograde ejaculation (the entry of semen into the bladder instead of going out through the urethra during ejaculation)
Low sperm count or motility issues
Abnormalities of the penis, such as severe hypospadias. This is when the ejaculate appears at the base of the penis instead of the tip. Occasionally, injury to the penis can also prevent normal penetration and ejaculation
Impotence that makes sexual intercourse impossible
Cancer treatment using chemotherapy or radiotherapy can also make men infertile

Here is the site I found in case you want to read more:~
http://www.insemination-help.com/

Of course this is not 100% guarantee that it will work But after a year of trying we will give anything ago. But if it doesn't work I'm hoping we can get IUI done.

I think your question was a good question and I think Rebecca gave a lot of good answers. They recommend IUI a lot of times to help with things like hostile CM. Sometimes there are issues where women's CM is not compatible with their partner's sperm and if you can keep the sperm from having to go through the CM to get to the cervix it can help. And also like Rebecca said it gets the sperm to the right place and keeps it there. There are other reasons for doing this but it can be the right treatment for certain fertility issues and it is worth trying if you have been TTC for a while.
