Curious...so according to my research online, your temperature steadily increases the later you sleep in. So if you went to bed at 10:00 and woke at 5:00 your temperature would be cooler than if you went to be at 10 and woke up at say 7:30...right? Well that makes sense to me...but only if you go to bed at approximately the same time every night...right? I don't know about you ladies but my bedtime varies almost everynight. I go to bed anywhere from 10-12. I wake up at 4:30 to temp because i get up at 5, 5 days a week. I guess I'm just rambling here and thinking outloud but I'm wondering how much your bedtime affects your chart? I just wish I could be more regular with my sleep patterns and get more accurate temps!

Also, let's say you woke up before your alarm...like today...I woke at 3:30. I Lay there and tried to fall back asleep but when I realized that might not happen for a while I decided to just take my temp in fear I would miss it. Is it more important to take the temp immediately upon waking...or would laying there resting until your true temping time rolled around be more accurate?

I usually get up at least once a night to use the restroom, so I always fall back asleep. So I dont necessarily have the problem where I cannot fall back asleep after I wake up in the middle of the night. As far as the different bed times, it varies on the weekend. As long as I get 3 or more hours of sleep, it really shouldn't make a HUGE difference. I dont think charts are ever going to be 100% accurate, because things can happen during the course of your cycle. Plus, you want to look at the overall pattern on your chart, not just one day. Although, I can be a hypocrite on that one...because I get excited when my temp drops (O time) or my temp shoots up (post O).

IKWYM But...they say you must have atleast 3 or more hours of uninterupted sleep for the temp to be accurate & you must temp at the same time each AM but then in the same sentance they say your temp rises steadily for every hour you sleep in...the rules contradict themselves...argh! Sleeping in later and going to bed earlier are basically the same thing right?????

you're right....but I get up, use the restroom and then immediately go to bed and fall right back to sleep. I think it would be interesting to temp before I get up to use the restroom and then temp at my normal time to see what the difference would be. I think all we can do is the best we can, if that makes sense. But your idea does have me thinking....

Oh, and I would think they would be the same thing....but....wow, I am stumped!

hmm well i know the best I can do is try to be as accurate as possible...I'm just frustrated with my chart this cycle because I know quite a few of my temps are basically throw aways due to lack of sleep etc. etc. and I don't like it! The worrying about getting good accurate temps in the morning is causing me to toss and turn or wake up too early! Man TTC can be stressful!

The real key factor is 3 hours of uninterrupted sleep. I woke up earlier than I usually do this morning and it took me a little bit to fall back to sleep, when I woke at my usual time and temped, it was a hair higher than it probably would be otherwise, but not enough to throw off my entire pattern.

If you wake up and feel like you are going to be laying there for a good 20 minutes or so waiting to fall back to sleep, I would say you should temp while you are awake. You can always temp again at your normal waking time if you are curious about the difference in temps.

There will always be variables in the time you go to bed and such, but none of those things will generally affect your temps so much that you will not be able to see your pattern of ovulation.

Just remember, there is no such thing as a perfect chart... there will always be a few things here and there.

Hope that helps...

I agree with Nikki. I think the point is that you need to be fully rested. When you wake up from a totally sound sleep that is when your temp is going to be the most accurate and I don't think when you go to bed will matter that much. I think that sleeping in might not even affect your temp that much if you were still waking up from a totally sound sleep.
