Hi,
I have heard some of the girls taking about Luteal Phase Defect and I was wondering if you can answer a few questions for me.
What were your symtomps?
How did the Doctor treat it?

I'm not sure there's any symptoms, other than knowing when you O'd and when AF comes. I haven't been to a doctor but most women take Vitamin B6 and it seems to have helped a lot of women by a couple days. Maybe someone who has been to a doc can help more

The only way to know is to know when you ovulate and count the days till your next period.
B6 is said to help.

I know because I chart. My Dr thinks it is the cause of the early miscarriages I have had. The treatment that I will be using is Clomid and progesterone.

I haven't been to the Dr for it b/c I just started charting last cycle, but I researched it a lot, and obviously it is usually having an LP less than 14 days. I would really only be concerned if it was less than 12. But also, I read that a "symptom" can be spotting for several days before your period. I looked that up because last month I started spotting 7 DPO and AF came 10 DPO. Now I am taking B6, so we'll se what happens this week! I am 3 DPO and praying not to spot!

Yeah I think 12-14 days is a normal LP.

I have had a few miscarriages in the past and my cycles are about 26-28 days. I started AF 10 days past O. I usually spot for a day or two before that. I was wondering if I should make an Appt with my Dr. or keep trying to BD and see what happens. Maybe I will start the B6 and see what happens. Thanks for all the answers!!

10 days is a pretty short LP. (that is what mine is) You could give the B6 a try and if that doesn't work go see the dr.

I was having issues for the past several cycles of spotting ( sort of a very lt. brownish color--not really enough to wear a pad or anything though) and that occured anywhere between 3-5 days prior to AF starting. I mentioned it to my doc, she said she was not concerned or that it was "abnormal". I always thought in my brain though yes, I did think it was something to be concerned about and this just isnt right. Plus my cycles were about 23-28 days long. It seemed like that spotting wasnt happening too many days after O. So I also thought my LP was too short. I still think that although she never really came right out and said that. Besides my Prenat vit. I started taking Fish Oil and Vit B6. I think its maybe added a day or two to my LP. I figure it cant hurt because I am FAR from having too long of an LP. I just had my first bloodwork drawn a few wks ago, it showed my progesterone level was a little low. Instead of starting me on progesteron supp. she had me start Clomid. So that's what I did .....just waiting to O this month I am use to having O happen around days 13-15 but today its currently day 18 & I'm still waiting.....probably due to Clomid I'm guessing. If this cycle is another bust I am going to ask her if I can have some sort of progesterone supp. Otherwise maybe this Clomid will kick in and work...I dont know, Getting frustrated, anxious and just ready for something to happen with it being my 18th cycle !!

My LP is super short sometimes as short as 4 days! I've started taking Clomid, B6 and B100 complex which is supposed to help. I've also been trying accupuncture. So far not too much has changed but this coming Thursday I have an appointment with a gyn. to discuss possibly going on Progesterone. Hopefully I can get this under control cause it's really driving me crazy!

If you usually have a 10 day luteal phase and have had miscarriage I would consider talking to your doctor about it.

My luteal phase was consistantly 10-11 days. After a year of TTC with only a miscarriage, my doctor did a progesterone draw at 7 DPO. My draw was very low. This means that either i'm not secreting enough progesterone, or my follicles (corpus luteum) are not mature enough at the time of ovualtion. I'm starting treatment now, but not sure what that is going to be. Doc is supposed to call me this weekend.

The symptoms of a LP defect are:
short LP (1o days and under is considered too short)
pre-menstrual spotting, and especially if it's brown
tail end brown bleeding at the end of AF
miscarriages
It can be treated with progesterone support after ovulation. In the case of PCOS, Metformin can also help by correcting the problem of suspended follicular development. If the follicles don't develop properly, the Corpus Luteum is weak and doesn't secrete enough progesterone for a healthy LP. Progesterone is the hormone that stabilizes the uterine lining and stabilizes pregnancy - so you can see why it's so important for that to be healthy.

Lots of good information! I am interested to see what happens with everyone using B6 or getting progesterone or clomid. I will keep you posted on whether or not the B6 helps this month.

The symtopms fit me to a T! I just thought that was normal. I guess normal for me and not anyone else. I will chart agian this cycle and then give the OB a call and see what he thinks. I wish everyone the best. Let me know if the clomid kicks in and starts working and how the B6 is working for everyone. Wishing lots of Baby Dust to all!!!
