I was seeing some talk about gals preferring female docs for various reasons and it got me thinking. I thought it would be a good discussion.

So which do you prefer and why or do you care?

I think I am weird but I have always preferred male docs. I don't know why I feel like this but something about gals looking at my stuff feels weird to me. I feel weird about it. I have had gal and guy docs/midwives though so I don't have a huge preference but if I had a choice I'd probably pick a guy.

I don't really think that you need to know what ladies feel like to be able to treat you. It is not like oncologists have personal experience with cancer but they can still diagnose and treat.

So anyway what are your thoughts on this matter.

For me, it's being comfortable that matters. I just cannot see myself being comfortable with a guy doctor.

I personally prefer female doctors because I just feel like they can personally relate easier or know what I mean by something since they have all the same stuff that I do. On the other hand, I know I'm a bit silly but I tend to get intimidated around other women so sometimes get shy too... Like my last gyno was this slim attactive lady who looked like some kind of fashionista... LOL And me, I'm pasty white and have heavy legs and suddenly felt like my legs werent smooth enough, I came in all sloppy in a sweatshirt, and what if she was thinking how funny I look down there. Plus she wasn't all that nice or supportive so needless to say I left there feeling like doodoo that day, let me tell you!

My mom has had the same male gyno for as far back as I can remember and she actually likes him alot and would never switch and I have just never understood how she could be confortable with that but after my last experience I kind of feel like, at least I wont have to feel like he is better looking that me or judging me!

I guess I'm on the fence because even thoughtg I feel that way.. I still think I would choose a lady first. Go figure!

All my docs are women, so i really can't relate to what it woudl be like with a man.

I do prefer a woman gyno. The reason has to do with the experience my sister had. She has horrible cyst issues. Her previous doc was a man. When a cyst the size of a football took over one of her ovaries, her doctor surgicaly removed the entire ovary. She then switched docs. She ended up having another similar issue with cysts, and the female doc was more conservative, wanting to scrape the cysts off, rather than remove ovarian tissue. I believe this is because a woman is more able to relate to female problems.

I've got to go with a female doctor, too, for what's already been said. It's more comfortable for me, I feel like they can relate better and I can be completely open and honest. I actually had a male doctor for one of the last procedures I had, and it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. He certainly didn't seem as compassionate, but that could have been because he was filling in for my doctor and we really didn't have that doctor-patient relationship.

I have a weird situation with my current OB/GYN. He is a very regular customer at our restaurant (he comes in 2-4 times a week) and he is also very highly recommended. Plus my dh really likes talking with him, so when we got pregnant we decided I should go to him. I only had one visit with him (during my m/c) and ever since then I have felt 'awkward' when he comes into the shop .. just knowing that he has seen my girly bits ( childish on my part I know). But the up side is that I get to pick his brains as much as I want to, without having to deal with a receptionist. He is a very nice guy too and loves to talk about pregnancy and babies all the time. He has 5 of his own kids with another on the way.

In any other situation though I would go with a woman Dr just to feel more comfortable

I am more comfortable with a male doctor. I can't really explain it other than like Angel said about being intimidated by other women.

Eh... I don't really care about the dr's sex; its more of a personality thing for me. My OB's office has 6 docs (2 women & 4 men). I love, love, love 2 of the male docs & both women. I'm kinda luke warm on the other 2 men. I've spent a lot of time in that office since 2006, so I'm very comfortable with all of them... I just like certain personalities better. Unfortunately, one of the one's I'm not crazy about delivered DS. Hopefully baby #2 can time his/her arrival so that I can have one of the Doc's I like!!

I have a woman right now...and I really like her a lot. I have always had a women since I've been going to the gyno because that's what I wanted way back then. I wouldn't mind seeing a doctor if I felt comfortable with him.
