Ok, so I'm freaking out a little bit...My DH got an S/A done a few weeks ago, and I just called my doctor's office to see if they had gotten the results yet. They didn't say exactly why on the phone, but they want him to get further testing done- a full hormonal panel. Does that mean that the results were bad? This is the first S/A we have done, so I don't know anything about it.

Oh sweetie... I dunno. We haven't gotten any testing done yet, so I don't have any experience on this one.
I hope some of the other girls can chime in and let you know.

I am not sure but I would call back and ask for more information. Kelly is getting a semen analysis done next week so I have been reading up on this some myself. From what I have read you need to have two semen analysis done before they will consider you to have a fertility issue. I would call back and see if they can tell you more.

Thanks ladies, I just called and was able to make an appt. for today to go over the results, and then he will get the lab work done while we are there.

My DH had his 1st SA done last month...we had some slightly abnormal numbers (morphology & viability). We plan to just have him repeat it in about 2 mo. There are many factors that can affect an SA & make it abnormal, so besides your DH having bloodwork done I would strongly encourage him to do a repeat in about 6-8wks. Good luck !

Yeah, I am sure the doctor will probly tell us we need to do another S/A, which I know my DH will just be thrilled with...

Well, we are back from our appt., and the results were not so good. He has sperm, but it's a very low count, and it doesn't liquefy like it's supposed to. I am just really hoping and praying that the next S/A will have better results. I'm not feeling too badly about it right now, just kind of overwhelmed and a little bit shell-shocked. I really thought that if there was a problem, it was with me.

(((HUGS))) I hope you don't mind this question and I hope my dh doesn't find out I posted this. But, what do you mean by it doesn't liquify like it is supposed to? The reason I ask and this is really personal (like I said hope my dh doesn't read this) my dh's semen usually has little clumps in it. I don't know if that is abnormal. But, when it is inside of me it turns to liquid. I know because when it leaks out it isn't clumpy but if he pulls out and ejaculates it is clumpy. Sorry for the TMI.
I am really anxious about my dh's semen analysis. He is supposed to get his done next week.
Did they give you an idea of things that you could do to improve his sperm count or what you could do if it was low? Have you looked into IUI? I know IUI can be helpful for guys with low sperm count because it gets more sperm up where they need to be and helps so they don't have to travel as far to get to the egg.

Patty- Well, we have never noticed it seeming overly thick or anything (of course, what do I have to compare it to?? ) but the doctor said that the sample should have liquefied in 20 minutes, and it still hadn't in an hour. I guess that means it was still really thick, like a gel or something. She said that makes it hard for the sperm to swim. I have not noticed any clumps in his, but I do know what you mean about it always liquefying in me, because it always seems like it comes pouring right out even before I stand up sometimes! (TMI!! ) So I don't know...
Yes, they gave us several suggestions to improve the count, like switching to boxers (I figured that one would be at the top of the list), keeping "things" as cool as possible especially around O time for me, no caffeine, etc. She also wanted me to get a Clear Blue Easy Fertility Monitor, so that I can pinpoint for sure when I am fertile.
The somewhat comforting thing is that we told them the day he had the S/A done, he was coming from a job, and he works construction, and it was REALLY hot that day. The doctor said that could definitely have affected the result adversely.
(Sorry, this is a book!) As far as IUI, my doctor did mention that as a possibility, although not until we get the second S/A done and have a better idea of what is going on. She also said IVF was a possibility, but that we are a long way from that right now.
Nikki- Thank you!!
