Hi ladies,

New to charting this month and have my account set up at FF. I bought my handy thermometer at Target and tried practicing with it last night. The problem is, I can never get the same temp from moment to moment. It comes out wildly different each time! 1/4 to 1/2 degree! Obviously, it needs to be accurate or it's going to mess up my chart. I am putting it right under my tongue in the back kind of on the side. This is what the instructions said in order to find the heat pockets. Anyway, I am very confused and skeptical that this is going to work if I can't even get the same temp from one minute to the next. Any suggestions?

Also, when I do get the temp thing under control, I am looking for a rise in temp to signal I am Oing? Doe the jump happen in one day or is a slow gradual rise in temp? I only have 5 OPK's this month and don't want to buy anymore this cycle. So I need to know when to start POS!

Your body temp may fluctuate. It doesn't necessarily mean there is anything wrong with your thermometer. The reason you want to take your temperature right when you wake is because moving around and being active (even mentally active) can affect your temp. So I would not worry about it. Use the first temperature you take in the morning when you wake and you should have an accurate chart. If you find you are not able to interpret your chart this cycle you may want to buy another thermometer but I haven't heard anything bad about Target brand so I think you are okay. I know my temp can change like that if I take it during the day.

When you ovulate you will have a rise in temperature. Usually it happens in one day. It may continue to go up after the initial rise but what you want to see is your temperature go above your previous six temperates and then stay up for at least three days. It doesn't have to go up consecutively day after day but it should stay above your preo temps.

Don't worry we will help you out.

Okay, thanks Patty. I will just keep charting away and see what happens. I have mastered how to just reach over and take temp when alarm goes off so I think I've got the hang of it lol!
