Ugh. Awful, isn't it? My D&C (for a miscarriage that wouldn't go on its own) 6 years ago was over $11,000! Thank the Lord for my insurance.

Yikes! Sorry about that. It's ridiculous! I was just thinking about the health insurance the other day. Ours has a 2000 dollar deductible and then we have to pay 20% after the deductible. This baby thing is going to be expensive. I just hope I can find a good job with a better insurance!

Sorry, that is horrible... I've never lived anywhere without free health care (well our taxes pay for it but YKWIM). I don't think I ever could.
But for a serious question... What happens in the US if someone happens to get hit by a car, or shot and they don't have health insurance? Surely they won't be left on the street right?

If you have an emergency the hospital has to take you. They can't turn you away. You just get stuck with the bill.

And if people can't pay the bill? They sell their house? Go bankrupt? It all seems so sad and heartless to me.. sorry for the tangent but I was curious...

Krista I hope you are able to work something out with them because that sounds ridiculous... and it's especially heartbreaking considering the circumstances

Do you not have health insurance? My health insurance sucks and is really expensive so I can relate. I have started keeping all of my medical receipts because if you get enough of them you can deduct them on your taxes.

I have been in your shoes though. Kelly and Brandon both had surgery around the same time as my ectopic so we had to pay three $1000 deductibles at once. It took us forever to pay all that off.

I would just set up a payment plan and pay what you can.

I'm curious... what does it cost to have a baby? Do you get a bill for everything and then have to submit the expense? Like Judy, I'm in Canada so we don't see a lot of that, it's a way out there concept for me!

This is EXACTLY what's happening! People are going bankrupt because they had cancer and had to spend a week in the hospital, etc. After spending much time in other countries, I realize that the healthcare system here is ridiculous. It's something that I'm very passionate about, not only because I work in healthcare, but because I know just how bad it is for many Americans.

Anyway, I could talk about it all night, but I know it's not polite to talk about politics, so I'll stop here.

Krista, I hope you get your bill sorted out soon. I can only imagine that it's like pouring salt in your wound when you have this horrible thing happen to you, then get the bill in the mail and it's like a reminder of what all happened. for you!

Wow ive always been curious too about how it all works. I live in the uk and we have the NHS. It just makes me realise how lucky we are to have it. I couldnt imagine having to go through a miscarriage and then after all that, having to worry about how to pay aswell!!
