We think my wife may have Postpartum hyperthyroiditis. We know for sure she's positive for hyperthyroid (via blood tests). Her Dr. has put her on PTU and I'm concerned about her returning to fertility. Does anyone know how quickly fertility returns when taking ptu? We may want more kids in the future but not right now.

The only way to know is to track it and see. Is your wife familiar with fertility charting or natural family planning? She can use that to read her body each day and detect when her fertility is returning. The information she gets from reading her signs of fertility can be used to avoid pregnancy or to achieve pregnancy. It's up to you! We use the Billings Ovulation Method to track my fertility. We also used it post partum to tell when my fertility was coming back.

We've been using ff for all of our 3 of our kids but her current chart is over 100 days long. She started treatment on ptu after a huge temp spike and it's been a little over a week since she started it. Her temps have returned to normal. You can see her chart at ff's site /home/1b8c28 . I think she may be returning to normal fertility so we've been extra cautious.

Oh ok, great! Post partum charting is a little more challenging than charting with cycles anyway, but the thyroid issues shouldn't affect her return of fertility too much. It may just drag out a little longer than usual. Usually post partum thyroid conditions resolve on their own, so time is a good thing. Flax Seed Oil supplements are also very good to support thyroid function.

You might want to ask over on the thyroid diseases board. Good luck.
