I think the
position is the same whether your uterus is retroverted or not ... but I do think you're right about the direction it's facing.
Look at this diagram:
http://www.womens-health.co.uk/retrover.asp.
With a normal uterus the cervix is partly protected by that partial "bend" in the vagina ... so probably less likely to hurt with tampon use or intercourse. But imagine where the cervix would be with a retroverted uterus. Same position, but rotate the whole image sufficiently to match the outline and the cervix would be pointing almost directly toward the vaginal opening.
Next time you check, try this. I find that when I touch either
side of the cervix, like gathering CM, I can barely feel it. If I touch the center, though, it can be very tender. Since at times (with a retroverted uterus) the cervix is "pointing" toward the penis or tampon, I think
that is what would cause the pain ... not being in a different "position", per se. Just facing differently.
My cervix is always hard to reach, too. Although you say yours is always past your second knuckle ... mine is always just at my fingertips! I only know it's "high" when I can't reach it at all anymore!

So I can't tell you what direction my cervix points during that time, sorry.
