HI, I'm definately no expert but I'll try and tell you about my experience with charting. Also if you read the getting started sticky you may find some answers to your questions.
I started charting about a year ago and have charted previously. I started with a reg therm and have graduated to a bbt! lol I take my temp around 6am because that's what time I wake up during the week, although dh's alarm goes off at 5, and I do wake up, I usually go back to sleep and temp at 6. I haven't had any affects of that on my chart and my O days are always correct. I know that because I use opk's and always get my + the day before I O. Also I have gotten up prior to temping before then go back to bed and then temp and my temps are usually fine. Will they be of, I don't know, but again it's never affected my O day.
The "bad" thing about temping is you don't know you O until after you O! kwim.
I hope this helped some. Good Luck! oh and I don't think the fan matters, I sleep with a fan on as well. Being sick can affect your temps if you are running a fever. Or you could run temps of 99 when you are fighting a virus so that temp would be inaccurate. YOu could always temp vaginally if you are afraid your oral temps are inaccurate. I never have, but some woman have.
Again, good luck!
