I just found your website. It looks like it will be a great help.

After using my first OPK for 8 days, I have yet to get a definite positive, although there have been several days of "maybe". Can anyone tell if it's possible for BBT to show O while OPK is not showing positive for O?

WELCOME! Yes your temps will show you O even if an opk doesnt get positive. There are many reasons you may not get a positive opk, you may have missed the surge if your only testing once a day. Maybe you had too much to drink and didnt wait long enough so it was watered down when you did the test.

Is it normal to miss the surge, or is it just beginners luck. Should I be using the OPK more than once a day?

Some miss it, its really hard to catch it at times. The surge is only 36-72 hours long. If your one who Os early after the beginning of the surge its easier to miss it. When I do opks and the line gets darker is when I start testing 2 times a day so I dont miss it.
