Production of estrogen from the dominant follicle peaks one or two days before ovulation. That surge in estrogen causes the anterior pituitary gland to secret luteinizing hormone (LH). LH is the hormone monitored by the OPK. LH travels through the bloodstream to the ovary causing enzymes to be released from the ovary which makes a hole in the sac of the dominant follicle. The ovum pops out of the hole and viola, you have ovulated. The LH surge makes ovulation happen, and occurs 12-24 hours before you ovulate. LH begins to rise, but does not surge, two or two and a half days before you ovulate.
That being said, the straightforward answer to your question as I understand it, is no, you cannot O before your LH surge.
The question on hand though, is the validity of your OPK tests. What time of day did you take them? Are you confident you recorded only the surge as a +? Since you started using the OPK before the LH surge (around CD10 or 11, assuming O on CD12), you should have been able to detect a slowly increasing level of LH (the test line was getting darker on your OPK).
