I voted "something else" because the whole mucus pattern trumps everything else. In order to confirm my fertility Peak with charting system we use (Billings Ovulation Method), the mucus pattern has to meet the following criteria:
CM must:
1. Develop and changes over a matter of days, becoming more wet
2. Become slippery
3. Dry up drastically
1 and 2 could happen, but not 3 - so no Peak. 1 and 3 could happen, but no 2 - so no Peak. 2 and 3 could happen, but no 1 - not the Peak. See what I mean? I can get an positive OPK or cramping with any of those scenarios, but the mucus pattern lets me know if the ovulation attempt was actually successful or not. The overall pattern is what counts for us. It's important for me to be really strict about it, because my cycles are complicated and I have so many warm-ups before ovulation really does happen. Evaluating the mucus based on that criteria lets me know if it was real or not. Temps are generally helpful in that regard too, but they are prone to variability due to other factors - so mucus comes first, temps back it up. If they don't agree, I go with mucus.
