Classic (aka Simple) siggies can be viewed as either incredibly difficult or incredibly easy, really it just depends on what you're used to making. When I first started making siggies classic was really the only style there was, and let me tell you, mine sucked. Classic siggies generally have no digiscrap elements, and rely almost entirely on photo editing, text, and brushes.
Here are some examples of classic style siggies made by advanced makers:

Now, don't worry, your's don't have to be exactly like their's. I would prefer you not do an exact copy of any of those, just use them as an idea. For this challenge I would like you to use at least 3 pictures, 2 fonts, and at least 2 different brushes.
Please have your entries in by no later than 9 am CST on Monday December 14.

Okay, so I feel kind of dumb asking this at this point, but what exactly is a brush? Do you just mean the paint brush tool? Do you just use it to choose one of the colors from the photo and then free hand paint some swirls in the background or something? I have never really done much with the paint brush tool and feel like I am missing something.

ok, brushes are things that come in PSE and that you can add to it. They come in shapes, textures, etc. All of the background on the Bellarina siggy is brushes. PSE comes with some already installed but you can also go to a site like DeviantArt to get more for free. You just type in what type of brush you want (ie. flowers, hearts, skulls brushes) in the search and you can download them for free. Then (if you use a PC) go to Computer>C Drive>Program Files>Adobe>Photoshop Elements>Presets>Brushes and paste the ABR file into there.
Then when you go into PSE click on the paintbrush and if you look at the top there should be a pull down thingy where you can select which brush you want to use.
I hope that makes sense to you.

Yes, it does make sense. I didn't realize that all of the background on the Bellarina siggy was done freehand! It looks very professional. I know where to find the brushes on PSE, I just wasn't sure how most people went about using them. Now I know what to copy. Thanks so much.

How you do the challenges:
Once you finish your first try on your siggy post it with "original" somewhere in the challenge post. Next go over to the Siggy Makers' Lounge and create a post saying "SSSC CC" (each person has their own) where you post that you are doing the sssc and what the week's topic is and that you would like constructive criticism (CC) and post your siggy. As you are given advice apply it to your siggy and then add the updated. You keep doing this until you get no more CC. Lastly you post your finished siggy in the challenge post with "final" somewhere in the post.
