I used Photoshop Elements, so my instructions are for that program, but here is how I did it:

Step 1: Open the photo you want to use in Photoshop

Step 2: Select the Type Mask Tool (Not the regular Type tool):

Step 3: Choose your font (be sure to make the point size large enough to get a nice clip of the picture).

Step 4: Type the letter you want on the picture:

(you may need to nudge the text after you type it to get the spot you want)

Step 5: When you have the text positioned where you want it click copy

Step 6: Paste the image into the siggy you are designing and you are done (you can adjust the size and add effects like you would to any picture from here)

There may be another way to do this - this is just how I figured out how to do it.

That's neat! I do that in PS, but I don't know if there is a type mask tool in PS or not. Thanks for sharing how to do that.

Teresa

Ok, I suck! It's in PS too. I guess I have been doing it the hard way, lol.

I never noticed this either. I have been using the clipping mask to do this! You can also do it with the quick edit mask but I don't know if that is an option in PS Elements. I am not sure how to do this in PSP. I am going to try to figure out how to do it.

I was inspired to figure this out too!! This is how I did it in PSPX, I don't know how to show the screens though...

1.I opened the picture I wanted to use for the letter
2.used the text tool to make the letter I wanted with a font that had an opening
3. changed the text layer to a raster layer
4.Positioned the letter where it would show the picture through the best
5. used the magic wand to fill the space outside of the letter black.
6. merged the layers
7. inverted the selection in the seletion menu
8. copied the selection
9. pasted it into a new document for all of the letters
10. I repeated it for all of the letters

here is my finished product, it isn't a siggie, I used it for a scrapbook page
Hope this helps!! maybe someone can use this to make a better tutorial with screen pictures...

Thanks for the instructions. I just printed them off so I can see them better while I am using PSPX. I really appreciate you taking the time to type that up.

Another way to do it in PSP.

Step one- open the picture you want to use.

Step two - Click the "A" to add text. Make sure there is no stroke, background is black, and a large font size. Pick a thick font also (so you can see the pic easily LOL!)

Step three - type the text right on top of the picture

Step four- Use the magic wand and select the letters (click the first one, then hold the shift key down and click on the rest)

Step five - select "Edit", then "Cut" (you will now see the black part of the text gone, but the outline of the text will remain)

Step six - select "Image", then "Crop to selection"

Whallah!

Hope that works for you! Let me know if you have problems with it.
