I am a total newbie to this photography thing. I am not even ready to think about someday starting a business. So right now I am just trying to take good pictures of my son and enjoying playing with them in PE. So...I have a Nikon D40x, kit lens, Elements 6 for mac. DH would like to get me something for Christmas. Should I ask for a different camera? A different lens for the D40x (50mm?)? Photoshop CS3? I know there is a wide range of $$ in my suggestions. I just don't know what would help me the most at this point. Any pointers?

is there a 50mm that will AF with the d40?
I had the d40 i couldnt stand how limited i was with a lens, well there was plenty but they cost more.
I think i would get photoshop maybe. That being said i bought my nifty fifty and i still dont have photoshop lol.
ok so just checked cause i was curious there is a 50mm 1.4 that will autofocus with it. amazon has it for $499. The only lens that will autofocus with it must be labeled AF-S. Incase u didnt know that or someone else reading was curious.

Yep, that's true.

As with the D40 the D40X doesn't have an built-in focus drive motor which means it can auto focus only with lenses which have their own drive motor (AF-S and AF-I lenses). The lack of a drive motor can be seen by the missing mechanical focus drive pin on the lens mount (see images below)
