Hey ladies! I am a total newbie to photography. I love my point and shoot camera but I would really like to get a DSLR. I have NO CLUE what to look for though, so I figure you ladies are the best in that department! And please remember to "dumb it down" for me since I am new to all of this!

What I really want is a good DSLR, but one that isn't TOO fancy. I am not looking to start my own photography business or anything like that at this time, I just want to be able to take great pictures and I want to be able to play around with different settings on a camera.

I want to have the option to buy more lenses in the future, but I am afraid they will cost a fortune and I won't be able too. So my ideal camera would have somewhat cheaper lenses. (I can't be spending $700-$1,000 for additional lenses, although maybe that is common?!?!) I want my camera to come with everything I need to get started without me wanting more immediately, if you know what I mean.

If you can give me any recomendations to look at I would really apprecitate it! Also, I plan to go look at cameras at a local store, but I know these things can be found online cheaper sometimes. Any sites you recommend?

Thanks in advance!

When you go to the camera store, figure out what you think fits best in your hand. It could be a Canon Nikon, Pentax or whatever. Then you go from there. Most consumer level cameras have an auto setting so it wouldn't be too fancy. Just make sure that you buy a camera that is towards the top of your budget. You wouldn't want to buy one and figure that a year or two later, it's not "enough" for you. But remember to budget in things like extra batteries, a camera bag, etc.

Lenses vary in prices. But the best lenses are worth it and, of course, they cost a lot. It's definitely a "get what you pay for" type of thing. The "cheap" ones that are considered a good bang for your buck vary, there's one for around $100 - that's the nifty fifty, it does not zoom so you'd have to move to and away from your subject. I think a great lens for you would be a Tamron 28-75, which is about $400. You don't "need" more lenses but you'll have the option. I shoot mainly with one lens though I have more than one.

By the way, this hobby, you'll always want more than you need That's just the way it is. No matter how much you buy, it'll never be enough, sorry lol.

If you're looking at Canons, I would recommend the Rebel line like the XTi, XSi and XS. If you're looking at Nikons, I would suggest at least the D90.

Sites I would recommend are bhphotovideo, adorama and amazon. Also, if used isn't a big deal, Craigslist too People are always upgrading to the next best thing... but the trade off is no warranty.

Don't I know it! LOL. Everything is like that! I know I will want more, I just want my "starter" camera to be good for a beginner and an intermediate!

Thanks for the tips!

I have the Canon Rebel T1i and I love it. Don't know much about anything else, but good luck!
