I do my vignettes two ways-- one from following a website tut, and made it into my own action:

Rocky Snapper: Creating Vignettes in Photoshop CS3 (text, photos & video)

and the other by just using the elliptical tool, drawing an oval around the subject, selecting the inverse and then using curves to darken the edges.
