If it were me I would buy a refurb from somewhere that has a year warranty like Cameta Camera. Then I would buy a nice lens like a 50 1.4 or something like that.

Canon or Nikon doesn't really matter, everyone has their own preference after they hold them so take a trip to Rockbrook or some where like that and get a feel for them.

If you look at nikons you can get a used d5000 for a pretty good price. I used to have a d5000 and it was an awesome camera, especially for a beginner.

I just got my first DSLR last year. Canon has a pretty awesome "trade-in" program. If you have a broken Canon camera (literally, any digital Canon camera, but MUST be broken), you can trade it in for another Canon refurb. I know when I picked mine up I got a Canon T1i with the package lens (I wouldn't get the package lens though, FYI) for around $350-400. It came with a year warranty as well. It's been a great camera, and I love that as a starter one, it wasn't a HUGE expense to get into.

This website gives more details: Canon Loyalty Program - return old camera, get better camera

well looks like im not getting one boo....dh went out and spent over 500 dollars on an xbox and games and i decided to instead buy the girls new beds...which they needed poor helena is still in a toddler bed and i need to get her out of that! so i bought bunk beds for Helena and Elyse....Raianna has just been on a mattress on the floor because she broke TWO bed frames...sigh....so shes gonna get Elyse's twin bed....and then i put some money back into the savings account...which leaves...very little from taxes maybe in a couple of months....
