Is it hopeless? For whatever reason, I can take great pics for clients, but crappy photo's of my own children. I think the background is horribly busy, but the boys needed a new spot and I was desparate. What would you do with the background, anything? Should I just start over from scratch just thinking about locating their red/white/blue shirts is enough to make me crazy.
edited to add the pic
Here is the only other one that even semi turned out, and the more I look at both of them, the more I dislike them (the photos, not the boys, lol). sigh...
Between those two I definately like the 2nd one better...the colors pop more, the boys all have great smiles and the baby seems more connected. Whereas in the first shot, the baby seems a little disconnected to me.
It's SO tough getting a good shot with 3 kiddos, I feel your pain.
ETA: Forgot to say...I'd probably convert the first one to b&w...that would help with the distracting background a bit, maybe.
I also agree that the second one is much nicer. And its a nice shot! Remember you are usually you're worst critic!
I don't think the background is too terribly distracting in the first one; given that this is an outdoor pic. I think its just that the boys aren't as connected. Doesn't show the relationship between the boys as well.
i really like the 2nd one - just lightened up in and put some contrast in it from photoshop and it would be perfect!
the first one i don't think is bad - maybe do it in sepia or an aged photograph, that would help it
