Are you just needing to take nice snapshots or are you talking formal shoots?

My house has crappy lighting too and I just use my speedlight (sb600) and it works very nicely. I bounce it off the ceiling and it does just what I need it to. That is for just shooting around the house and getting decent images, not studio lighting.

You can buy a pretty cheap bounce flash on ebay...

This is what I had before I got my sb600.
I-TTL BOUNCE FLASH AF FOR NIKON D5000 D3000 D5100 D3100 | eBay

Its pretty simple but it worked for what I needed.

We bought a starter kit.
This one :
Lozeau - Photoflex First Studio Umbrella Kit

Works well for our living room
But it's still not enough, I still have to adjust lighting in lightroom and photoshop.
