My hubby and I would LOVE to open our own business and team up as photographers and event coordinating. (example: organize charity events or weddings or any large or small gathering and doing the photography for them as well)

But this is his "retirement job" as he calls it. He is in the military and has like 20 years to go still! lol but I would love to get started in the next 5-10 years to do it on the side.

Well, currently Im a software engineer. I dont want to quit what I do... but I would like to have a side business. I have done event coordination/planning in the past, so I think Id like to do something in that area and combine my photography with it.

Mostly - I want to do photography of families - maternity, newborn, infant, toddlers & kids. Maybe some couples stuff.

Event coordination - Ive mostly done charity events, mystery dinners, corporate parties, 5k runs, etc... Id like to do some weddings & maybe eventually get into wedding photography - but more hte photojournalistic style. Well see!

Lala- how did you get starting in your event planning/coordinating? I would love to start getting involved in that aspect sooner rather than later, but I don't even know where to begin. lol

It all started through volunteer work. I volunteered on a committee & was part of the event planning. I also used to be involved in boxing - so I decided to organize a 5k run to raise money for the boxing club (we did a lot of work with underprivaledged kids - free classes & the adults dues paid for the kids to travel for tourneys).

So - I did the 5k run for them 2 yrs in a row.

I also did a golf tournament for a charity.

Finally, I volunteered for a committee for the American Cancer Societys Making Strides Against breast cancer. I was originally supposed to be the Logistics Chair until the Event Chair moved (relocated with her job). They asked me to step up bc of my experience. So i did. We had quite a successful event too I might add. i was the event chair again this year despite my pg until they hired a HORRID staff person at the ACS - I couldnt take the stress she added to the event (and drama oh my the drama) so I stepped down, though I still help (actually, all of the committee quit except one once I stepped down - I felt bad, but hey - u gotta do what you gotta do - theyre rebuilding the committe finally now that the person they hired ended up quitting).

Then - of course my company knew that I did it, so they asked me to plan a mystery dinner for a corporate party, and i did - 120 people! I wrote teh script myself and it went over really well thank god lol.

Im one of those "dive in head first" kinds of people though - I just tackle it.

If youre interested in doing it I suggest start by volunteering for a committee of some sort. Im still a fan of the ACS & they have some great large scale events. Itll give you experience, and a LOT of community contacts!

I'd LOVE to have my own business as well, but I still have a LOT of learning to do. A friend and I have always talked about how we would love to do it together...especially things like weddings and such, but with young kids that will have to wait awhile.
Sooner rather then later, I'd love to photgraph more babies and children.
