Just wanted to say that I love lurking here and looking at your photos!

My fiance has been at me for a while to take a leap and start a photography business. The other day my mom told me I should as well...

Maybe I'm just too hard on myself, but I just feel like I'd have a hard time charging money for my photos. I absolutely love photography and taking pictures of my little one but I know that doesnt mean I have the credibility to actually be "a photographer."

I know taking photos is a never ending learning process but I don't know if I will ever feel like I know enough to take the leap and start doing it as more than a hobby..

Those of you who are pro-- can you tell me what tools/equiptment you started with when you started out with your business?

Right now I just have a Canon Rebel, its stock lense and a 50mm 1.8. Also have a few filters. No extra flashes or lights or other lenses.

I'm also pretty handy with photoshop, as my dad taught me how to use it as a child.

Any advice on when i'll "know" that i'm ready to take the leap would be great!

I would go with how you feel, not what others say you should do. You don't HAVE to start an official business. You can do it as a hobby and on a word of mouth basis, just make sure to claim your income on your taxes. From there, if it takes off you could start an official business. Let me tell you, it is rough out there for photography. There is a lot of competition in most places.

We would love to see some of your work!

I agree it's very rough to be in business unless you want to be dirt cheap.....my prices are still cheaper than i WANT them to be but I just can't compete with all the people offering 20-75 sessions including the disc.....I have no DESIRE to compete with them....at those prices this business would be costing me money. I agree just do it as a hobby and claim the income on your taxes

if it takes off....great! if not....you arent out all the start up costs of a business

when you are confident that you can produce a full gallery of GOOD photos (20-30 for me) EVERY SESSION then go for it. until then I would just practice do some free sessions and stuff.

and no matter HOW "READY" you think you are..........you will look back a year from now and wonder how you could have been doing so much wrong lol....I know I do this every year lol....I cringe when I look at stuff from when I was starting out

Thanks so much for the advice so far girls!

There are a number of photographers around here but honestly there's only one "baby" photographer that is exceptional and her prices and extremely high (we went to her for our family/newborn portraits). I'm not looking to charge a ton of money but I'm also not going to give away my work either if I decide to start charging.

I would really love to be able to do a few shoots a month eventually...

And I'm totally all about making sure I claim my income! My DH runs an electrical business on the side from his regular job, so we've learned most of the ins and outs of how the taxes and whatnot work.

Thanks again guys! (and I'll be sure to share some pics in the near future!)
