Are you thinking point and shoot or digital SLR?
I haven't owned a point and shoot in years, so I'll just tell you what I know about SLRs.
My first SLR was the Canon Rebel T3, and nowadays is a pretty affordable option (I think around 500 for the body and your basic lens). I think I read somewhere that you really don't need more than 12 megapixels in a camera, so anything more (I want to say the T3 is 15+) is gravy. The lenses you want depend on what you're going to shoot--the basic 18-55 that comes with the camera is great for your basic stuff. I also love my 55mm f 1.8 for portraits. You can do a little more research online to find out exactly what lenses you want after you know exactly what you want to shoot. Hope that helped a little!

pixels are the small squares you see on your LCD screen.. so it in pictures the more pixels you have the better the quality of the pictures you will be having... with lenses there are two elements you should look into; the focal length (the magnification of the object in focus) and aperture or the amount of light you allow to enter on your lens. I hope this helps
