SLR is Single Lens Reflex. I think that looks like an okay camera. My digital is similar to that in features and zoom. I just LOVE the zoom. it will probably work great for you. Hopefully you'll be able to hold it and try it out, that usually makes a big difference as well.
Kelly...I'm excited for you, that looks like a great camera for you to get started with, Canon is awesome, and if you're not ready to jump on the DSLR bandwagon, no sense in spending the money.
Like Amanda said, SLR stands for Single Lens Reflex and I'm copying and pasting this part so it's not in my own words, ...**The single-lens reflex (SLR) is a type of camera that uses a movable mirror placed between the lens and the film to project the image seen through the lens to a matte focusing screen.** Basically what the means is that when you're looking through the viewfinder, you are seeing what the lens actally sees...whereas if you think about on other cameras, where your viewfinder is near the lens, you're not actually seeing what the lens is seeing, just close to it. Does that make sense?
Also, a big bonus with SLR's is the ability to change your lenses, which is great!
