as in you and bub solid black and a white background?
Use the marquee tool to select you and bub use a free hand brush and paint the black in because increasing the saturation may not work. Feather it a little to soften the edges, then invert the selection so that you have the background and then paint it in white.
I done one really quick but is that the sort of thing you meant?
Use the Magnetic Lasso tool to select the background
Quick mask can be used to pick up what was missed (using the eraser and paint tools to help you out.)
Now unmask and the background will be selected
Using the blur tool, soften edges
Adjust levels like shown.
Use the blur tool to soften edges again..
