I always hear "NEVER use flash". And I agree that pics w/out flash are more natural looking, but when is it ok to use the flash?

The photographer that did our portrait (at TPP) used a flash, and those looked wonderful.

If you've got a great flash that you can bounce off of a wall or in someway diffuse the light, you should be able to use that flash pretty much whenever you need it. Unfortunately on most point and shoot cameras, you don't have these options. So if you have a standard on-board flash, consider trying to bump up your ISO to see if you can get the shot without a flash. But if you still can't, go ahead and fire your flash. Or if you have control of the situation, see if you can move your subject to a room with better lighting.

Well since I have the xt I use a bounce flash. My flash cost me over $200 so I use it as much as I can LOL. It's a bounce flash and it has a zoom lens. I also bought an omnibounce cover for it. It's the Sigma EF-500 DG Super and I love it. I never ever use my onboard flash because it's too harsh and it's shooting distance isn't as large it also uses a lot of the battery.
