Ok, so I finally found out the details. They have to be at the hospital at 6 am. Don't have an exact surgery time. They will be going in under his arm to his artery. They are going to cut out the part of his artery that is preventing it from growing (it is kinked) and the good part back together. The procedure is expected to take twenty minutes. Afterwards, he will be in ICU for four-five hours. None of us will be allowed to see him in ICU. If all is well, he will be moved to a regular room. We expect the stay to be five days long.

After my post, I talked to my sister. He will have FOUR IVs and will be intubated.

Good luck with the surgery! ICU is scary but don't worry too much about the number of tubes/lines/etc. Eventually, they all come out (and what a good thing that is!).

Just one word of advice from a veteran of several ICU stays (well, Daniel, not me), make sure the doctors stay on top of the pain relief. With little ones it is easy to forget that they may be uncomfortable (or in pain) even if they are not crying (and even several days after surgery).

So, good luck again.

Take care

Paula

Just a quick update: Surgery went really well. He has four IVs and a catheter. (One IV is actually a spinal tap that is administering pain meds.) When we left he was finally awake and playing. I'll give more details Sunday.

Ok, wow, I actually have a few minutes to update:

The procedure went well. They took more of the artery than planned, but it went well. When he woke up, he was still intubated. The nurse went to remove the tube and he freaked out (not that I'd blame him--he had to have been terrified!) so they re-sedated him. He woke up for the second time and complained about itching, so they gave him Benadryl. The little guy slept ALL DAY. I think he was awake a total of may 1-2 hours. Friday they wouldn't allow any food, just ice chips. He didn't seem to mind though.

When we got back to the hospital Saturday morning, he was sitting and playing. Saturday was uneventful with the exception of a bunch of false hope from the nurses. (They said they'd remove a bunch of things and move him out of ICU--all without the docs EVER mentioning it. Of course, none of it ever happened.) On Saturday, he was on a liquid diet. Juice, sherbert, chicken broth, and jello.

Today, they finally gave him real food. He had a grilled cheese for lunch and salsbury steak for dinner.

Not a lot to report. He is still in ICU and still has all IVs and the catheter in.

Oh! And meds: They have him on a blood pressure med and kidney meds. He will be on medication for his kidneys for at least 6 months to a year. The concern is that his kidneys will go into to overload with all the "extra" blood and shut down.

My sister has to keep reminding him to take the occasional deep breath. (It hurts him to do so.) They say that if he doesn't there is a risk of his lungs collapsing.

They also warned about his shoulder locking up, but I don't foresee any problem there. He's already using it more.

I'm sorry if this is all over the place, my mind's not all here. Feel free to ask any questions.

I'm glad he's doing well!

Little kids are so reslinent! An adult would be whining about pain for a month, and he's playing and eating grilled cheese. Way to go little buddy!

I am glad he is doing well! I know when you aren't used to all the lines and tubes it can be a bit scary but it will all come out soon. Also, sometimes we give little ones bubbles to blow to help with taking deep breaths. They think it is fun and they are getting a good lung workout at the same time!

That's not a bad idea. I wonder if they'd allow that...

I just talked to Dad. Things are going super well! They finally removed the epidural and catheter. He is completely on solid foods. If all goes well, he can come home tomorrow or Wednesday.
