Ladies, I’ve missed you all so much in these last 3 or so weeks I’ve been away. Separating myself from my addiction to JM, DS, etc. was very similar to when I gave up caffeine a year ago….Hard for the first week and then manageable. But upon hearing that Destiney had her sweet boy I knew I needed to come check in on all of you. Congratulations to Destiney and to Angela for her recent BFP. And hello to all of the newbies I haven’t met yet.

I also am excited to share a great experience I had last night. My friend Kathy, who is about 32 weeks, is a new friend and is planning a homebirth with her 1st child. Needless to say, it’s been a great bonding agent for our friendship! And she’s a post partum doula too! This week her husband is in Israel for business so she invited me to join her at her home birthing class. I was beyond honored and excited! To be around so many couples, all lovely and NOT crazy (LOL), that are planning natural homebirths was incredible. And the educator, also a prenatal yoga teacher, was a wonderful soul and I learned a lot simply from her demeanor. Kathy knows and is encouraging of my desire to become a birth doula and was excited and impressed at my natural instincts acting as her birth partner. So was I!

The first part of the class a couple came in to share their home birth story of their son Manuel, now 2 ˝ months old. The couple were in their late 20’s probably. You would NOT believe their story. She was in labor for 3 days!!! The first 24 were quite easy. They were able to go out to eat and even attend a birth festival. But the next 48 hours of hard labor were tough. She was very honest in discussing the moments she thought she couldn’t do it, even talking about how past childhood sexual abuse came up, making her think that her body was broken and that she wouldn’t be able to achieve this birth.

After taking 6-7 hours to dilate EACH cm, she finally reached full dilation. But after 70 hours or so of labor, she had absolutely no energy to push. So her midwife told her that she would need to rest to gain strength again. The midwife helped her get into a meditative state, melting into the bed. After 70 hours of bravely standing strong and pushing against her contractions, she had to learn how to let her entire body go completely relaxed, letting the wave wash over her and come to a complete still on its own. She relaxed like this for 2 hours! During which time her contractions slowed down to about 9 minutes apart.

After her rest period she got this second (probably 10th!) wind and was ready to push. After an hour of pushing her precious baby boy was born. The entire time of her and her husband telling the story, there was such an aura of happiness. They commented on the extreme importance of having a trusted birth team around them, including the midwife, a sister & a best friend. Despite the difficulties, and the crazy amount of time it took for their boy to come into the world, they both came away feeling empowered. And the entire birth team discovered a closer connection to not only the birthing mother but also each other in this grand long experience.

They kept remembering the phrase, TRUST BIRTH. And one thing I’ll never forget that they said was that natural birth gives you EXACTLY what you can handle. If you can remember to trust birth, trust that you won’t really be given more than you can handle mentally or physically, then you will be successful, no matter what the outcome.

I just wanted to share that story with all of you. It surely both impressed and inspired me and I hope it does you too. I hope your pregnancies are going well. Much love to you all!

That is very inspirational! I really can't imagine laboring for that long, mentally or physically, but this story just proves that if you TRUST BIRTH, your body is capable of the unimaginable! Thanks for sharing!

That is amazing and scary at the same time! I wonder how much the doctors would have been pushing to induce/give pain meds was she in a hospital...
I am so excited to actually get pregnant (lol) and get to know as much about natural birth as I can...
Thanks for sharing!
