My friend Kelly who is only 5 weeks behind me with her pregnancy found out at the beginning of her pregnancy that she has a split utuerus. So far everything had been going well and a couple weeks ago they started her seeing the specialist to check on the cervix and baby's growth. Everything was fine at her last appointment, but she went in yesterday to see the specialist again and her cervix was funneling. I'm not exactly sure what that means, but from what Kelly told me, her cervix was opening from the top and could continue to open all the way. They sent her to the hospital immediately and have given her meds to try to stop the cervix from opening. The specialist said he is optimistic they can keep the baby in there until the early 30 weeks. Her regular OB came to see her this morning and said she wants to keep her in the hospital for another week to monitor everything but that she is definitely going to be on bedrest from here on out. Kelly is so upset - she was having asuch a great day yesterday knowing she had hit 24 weeks with no problems. I feel so bad for her...she is just overwhelmed and very upset right now. They had someone from the NICU come in to talk to her this morning about the possibility of starting steroids just in case the baby were to be born soon. I just can't imagine how scared she is. My hear is just aching so much for her right now.
So please keep my friend in your prayers...you ladies are so awesome, I knew you'd be the best to share this with. We're hoping baby Zachary will stay in a while longer and Kelly won't have any more problems.
T&Ps!!!!!! Can they not do a cerclage? I hope everything is ok. She made it to 24 weeks and that is a huge milestone. One of my patients did deliver at 23.5 weeks and her daughter is 2 now, with some developmental issues, but she is an incredible child and quite the miracle. Every day that baby can stay in there will be for the best.

I asked her if they had mentioned trying a cerclage and she said no one had mentioned it yet. I was a little surprised. I don't know if it's because of the condition of her cervix now or what. It is definitely awesome that she made it this far with no complications; her OB had prepared her from the beginning that the risks of her miscarrying were very high.
