So my first appointment is tomorrow. What are some good questions I should ask her? What concerns would you have?

(this is for a homebirth midwife)

I'm not big on lists of questions- but mostly the vibe, how you feel about her and the atmosphere is important.

Good things to know is: What she carries (herbs, meds, suturing equiptment, iv fluids) I personally would prefer a midwife who at least had O2, herbs/homeopathics and pit for pp bleeding. More is better, as long as she uses them all responsibly. You can also ask how often she uses dfifferent things.

When will she join you in labor? How far might she be? Who will come with her? Who is her backup?

if waterbirth is important to you also make sure she has experience in that.

Good luck, I hope it goes great!!!

Good suggestions Cheryl. I've met her before and I'm comfortable with her. I think my only questions really will be about post-birth stuff (what she'll do about bleeding, etc...) and if she has a backup person. Technically she's not state-licensed though so I don't think she actually has an OB backup or anything, so if we ended up needing the hospital it would be whoever was available. She's licensed as a US midwife, just not specifically for the state.

Midwives here also just have the on call OB be their backup. It's good to feel out how they accept her transfers.

Also cesarean and transfer rates are good to know- about a 15% transfer rate is what my birth center has, and about 1/2 of those mamas have cesareans. Of couse experienced mamas have lower rates, first timers are usually higher.

That is great that you already know and like her I'm excited to hear how the appt goes!

**UPDATE**

so... no one was there She operates out of her home and we waited half an hour, went to lunch and came back and no one was there. Seriously hoping it was an oversight or she had a birth or something.

Dang the last week or so has felt like no one cares about me... stupid hormones making me all upset...

awww. I care about you!!!!

I think sometimes everything happens all at one, and it stinks.

IMO- she better have a DARN good excuse! Even at a birth she should have a second to call or email, or have someone lined up to do that for her. If it was an emergency or transfer- something out of the norm- then I would feel somewhat understanding. I just think that is so inconsiderate!

Yeah, I know she has a cell phone, so the ONLY thing that makes sense to me is that one of us had the appointment time/day wrong. I can't imagine she'd be in such a rush to get to a birth that she couldn't take a couple minutes to call her scheduled appointments..

problem is, I think there's only ONE other homebirth provider in my area and no birth center anymore. The other homebirth midwife has a bit of a strong personality for me but I haven't really sat down to talk to her and I believe her fees are a lot higher. This one is stretching it as it is. My only other option is a hospital birth or unassisted HB.

I left a note on her door, so hopefully she'll call me soon.

I know you all care about me, I'm just having a hard time dealing with some people IRL who are ignoring me and it's making me feel down.

I hope there is a good reason and things work out with her. That sucks that there are so few options in your area
