I was talking to one of the Airmen today, she is about 17 weeks pregnant with her first. She is young ,I think 20 or 21, and looks even younger. She was asking questions about pregnancy, so at the end of the conversation I asked her about who she was seeing for her OB. She told me the name, but said she was thinking of changing. I encouraged her, the group she is with is high intervention. The reason she said she wanted to switch was because they were treating her like a child. Geez, I hate that. This is a young woman that has been in the military for at least 3 years. She is intelligent and can make informed decisions.

I gave her my midwive's card. I think they are full for Sept, but hopefully they will take her. She would have to put in a request for an out of network provider though. She implied she has a history of abuse because she doesn't like being taken care of/touched by male providers. I told her when the SG calls her to ask why she wanted to go to the midwives to tell him these feelings and hopefully for that reason he would approve it.

I also showed her my copy of Pushed and told her it was very informative. We also had a conversation about 'birth rape' and why I chose to see midwives and not another OB. I told her about the last sOB I saw, she was horrified.

Even if she doesn't get to see the midwives I think she is more aware and that is always a step in the right direction.

Spread the word, Mama! Hopefully she takes some of your advice to heart. And you don't have to be a victim of abuse to not want a male provider. No thanks! Midwifery care is the way to go!

By the way, was this on purpose or just a coincidence?

Oh, i know that. I prefer women too, but it was the way she said it. Something like, "I have a complicated past and I can't stand when they touch me.' That was what led me to think something happened to her.

That is good Hopefully, even if she cannot see the midwives, she can come to you for advice and support and education.

Totally on purpose

That 'term' gets used a lot on the ICAN list...lol, it is very appropriate for him. The other OBs I have seen in the past I wouldn't refer to that way just Dr. Chainsaw and his partner Dr. Massacre.

^^LOL!

That's wonderful! I would love to talk to the pregnant women I know about this stuff, but unless the topic comes up I would feel uncomfortable about it, because you never know how people will react. That's so great that you were able to give the information to someone receptive and possibly make a huge positive impact on her birthing experience. Yay!
