This is the question I have asked myself FOREVER!!!!

I know it has to be birth related. I considered being a L&D nurse, but I know I wouldn't be able to deal with that in this country. Then I considered being a midwife, but I am not sure i want the responsibility.

So I had settled on being a lactation consultant and birth educator. I figure I can help women achieve their ideal birth and avoid the primary c-section as an educator. At the very least help them make informed decisions when they need to. As a lactation consultant I can be there and listen to their stories and be kind and understanding if they didn't get the birth they wanted.

Then I was talking to my friend. She has a degree in sign language education and interpreting. But, she doesn't want to just be an interpreter. So I said, 'we can go into business together and gear it towards women that are Deaf.' She LOVED it! She doesn't want to be an interpreter, but she does want to be involved in the Deaf community. We wouldn't discriminate against hearing women, but I don't think there are any programs out there that have geared their techniques towards someone who can't listen to a tape or CD.

Also, when there is a language barrier it is difficult to make your wishes known. I am sure MANY women are forced into a c-section because they are intimidated by their hearing doctors. I mean if I was intimidated, as strong willed as I am, how would someone in that position feel?

That's great! I have a deaf aunt and she has two young sons. I know birth was an especially challenging time for her.
