picked up a bottle of prenatals last week at whole foods. The multis I currently have are from TJs and I have to take 5 a day. Needless to say I rarely get that many in me a day, especially since I take other stuff too. I'm like an old person with 14 pills a day. Anyway, the bottle says ask your doc before taking if you are pregnant or nursing. First of all, the pregnancy thing made me giggle. I looked on kellymom the other day because the flax oil I have says the same thing (those of you not taking flax seed oil I HIGHLY recommend it) and of said it was safe and encouraged. I really don't want to bother either of my docs to ask about a stupid vitamin. I know when I was first nursing I was still on my RX prenatals.

Soooo basically I am fairly certain there is no real reason for that warning but I just wanted to throw it out there in case someone knew something I wasn't aware of.

And no, I'm not pregnant. We are "taking the glove off" next month. Johns phrase of course. I worry about folic acid and the first month so I want to be safe.

Hmm...my midwife told me to continue taking my vitamins after Brennen was born. I never took an official pre-natal, but I take a daily women's multivitamin, additional folic acid, calcium and DHA. During my pregnancy I had to also start taking iron which makes me terribly constipated so I take chelated iron from the health store which is much easier on my body. I'm still taking them all now, too. I wouldn't think there would be any reason not to take a vitamin at any point in life.

I take a prenatal and it is one pill a day. I also take vegan DHA. Unless there are herbals in it as well, I would not be too concerned.

I've been taking prentals everyday for.... like 8 years straight! All through my pregnancy with DS#1... then through the 4 yrs TTC#2, all through DS#2 pregnancy... then after for 2 years while I BF, then we started TTC again so I didn't bother stopping them and then got pregnant so continued them. Now my midwife has me on her super pills (6 a day, they suck!). I'm REALLY tired of all the pills though!!! Once the baby is born I can go back to just a simple 1 a day which will be nice!

I just take a woman's multivitamin right now, and it's one a day. I eat a very balanced diet, so I feel confident not taking a prenatal instead. I can't see a reason why you couldn't take it while nursing, it seems like everything says that anymore.

I take my prenatals 365 days a year, every year. I haven't stopped in years.

However, all I take is an OTC prenatal, so I don't know much about the super-duper ones like you have. If it was more than one a day I'd never remember, lol. However, there shouldn't be anything in a prenatal that is harmful to pregnancy or nursing. I've always thought they put the 'ask your doctor' clause on there to make sure that each woman gets adequate coverage, as all vitamins tend to be slightly different.

I took an over the counter prenatal during pregnancy and breastfeeding with DD. This time around I'm also taking a vegi DHA. I will continue both through breastfeeding. I just can't imagine why the silly bottle says ask a Doctor if it is made for pregnancy and breastfeeding.. who knows.

I take one a day, here's whats in it:

Amount Per Tablet - % Daily Value:
Vitamin A 4,000 IU - 50%, Vitamin C 100 mg - 167%, Vitamin D 400 IU - 100%, Vitamin E 11 IU - 37%, Thiamin 1.5 mg - 88%, Riboflavin 1.7 mg - 85%, Niacin 18 mg - 90%, Vitamin B6 2.6 mg - 104%, Folate 800 mcg - 100 %, Vitamin B12 4 mcg - 50%, Calcium 200 mg - 15%, Iron 27 mg - 150%, Zinc 25 mg - 167%.
