Very interesting article. It made me think of the birth of my niece just a few weeks ago. The anesthesiologist was telling her the side effects of the epidural and my sister (because she hadn't prepared at all for not having an epidural) was freaking out so much and in pain so we was just like "I don't care, just give me the epidural".

That was awesome!!!! I love it because it talks about one of my BIGGEST pet peeves!...Making informed decisions, by doing your OWN research! Not just taking someones word for it!...That goes for everything we do! but especially as parents!...Ok, enough said! I'll get off my soap box

Great article!

When I was transferred to the hospital, the anestesiologist came and said he had papers for me to sign and handed them to me with a pen. I refused to sign them until he answered ALL of my questions. He was very nice about it, but i am sure i was a rare breed there. When he brought me the forms i was not sure what my "options" were and was not going to consent to anything prior to knowing what was gonna happen. The OB was very rude about me asking questions about the consent form but since she could not cut me open until i signed it, she had to discuss it with me.

Wow, having only had a birth center birth and no major or even minor surgery, I have never read an anesthesia consent form before! That thing is freakin' scary!

it is so sad, but it sounds like it is a nationwide issue. I have never really seen informed concent being a hospital staff priority. It truely is up to the parents, the childbirth educators, and the doulas to help parents be informed.

I think I'm gonna print this and save it, great article!

thanks for the link. What is the dental injury that can happen? I admit, I don't fully know all the possible side effects of the epidural myself! I know I have read about it, but I don't really remember many of them.

If you have to have general anesthesia (i.e. all the way asleep with a breathing tube) teeth can be chipped or knocked loose if there is difficulty visualizing the cords.

When I was a resident the OBs and Midwives at the hospital would get ticked off at me because I would explain all of the risks of anesthesia to the patients before having them sign. They said that I was trying to scare the patient!
I'm so glad that I don't do OB anymore.

Good for you!! I didn't have the nerve, after those epi threads that turned ugly. But you did a good job of presenting it. I hope people actually take the time to read it.

I positioned it in a way that is personal to me. Something that struck me was the verbiage in the consent about "Residents" - it wasn't well received so far but hopefully someone finds it useful, even if they don't comment about it.

I think it's INSANE that the hospitals don't have you read that during an appt when you are clear headed. It makes me furious that they wait until you are in labor to "read" the form.
