how long your labor really was? Ok for me I woke up with real contractions and had them all day long. I delivered her at 815p but I wasnt in "active labor" until about 7p. So while I labored with real contractions all day nothing really hurt or made much progress until that last hour. Which I guess was transition and pushing.

Ive heard some people say they were in prelabor for X amount of time with only an hour or so of real labor. Then some people say they were in labor for 36+ hours.

How do you figure it out?

I guess Im really curious because if I wait at home until it hurts and I feel like I need to go in then I will probably give birth before the hour is up. I was even doubting I was in labor last time until that night.

I don't' know... for me I don't have early labor, I go straight into active so there's no question when labor began...

I don't really know what to tell ya. I went into early labor for over a day then stopped.....then when I went into actual labor a few days later it went right to very active right away.

Yeah, I don't have early labor either. When my contractions start they are 3-4 minutes apart and last almost a minute each. So I just time from either water breaking or first contraction.

With Liam my water broke at 3am and he was born at 9:49am--so 6 hours 49 minutes.

With Lochlann my first contraction woke me up at 1:15am and he was born at 7:35am--so 6 hours 20 minutes.

Good question...

I am assuming that you count the time that you start having true labor at the moment your contractions are unbearable???

I know I plan on birthing as much at home, and won't go until the contractions are really painful and 3-4 mins apart....

I think it just depends on the kind of labor you have. I've heard that "active" labor isn't really until you hit 4cm from some doctors.

With Lily my water broke around 1030pm. I had my first contraction around 1am and they started out super close together and super long. They were about a minute apart and lasting for a minute or more when we went to the hospital around 4am. But when they checked me I was only 4.5cm at that point. She was born at 7:51am. I count my labor from my first contraction, so almost 7 hours.

I dunno, I had some contractions but they felt more like period cramps. I didn't know they were contractions at the time, but I told my husband I had a huge feeling we were going to have the baby that day. And then my water broke later that night and they really started. So I just count it from when my water broke, or an hour beforehand.

My early labor gets me to about 5cm.... I have contractions about 5-6 minutes apart, I can breath through them but I still have to stop what I'm doing and concentrate.... Then the active part or the hard part starts, and I usually deliver in about 2-3 hours from that. At least that is whats happened in my two natural labors. However, my early part of labor varies in length... for one baby it was about 17 hours, the other it was 3 days... so really that part varies...

My labors with both kicked into gear immediately. With Abby, my water broke and contractions started. From water breaking to delivery was 8 hours. With Anna, I had discomfort and back pain, but I didn't start having contractions that I recognized until about 4am and she was delivered just before 10am. I did question if I was in labor, but at the same time, I knew the contractions were strong enough to be real labor.

I get a lot of prodromal labor which is common when baby is not really in a great position, it is also normal for women that are having a VBAC, well at least anecdotally.

With Mike I was in early labor when I went to work as I was driving in I knew something was up. I went to L&D at about 8:30 am, was sent to walk and then sent home, at about 11:30 am I was admitted at 6 cm and he was born around 11:30 pm, so I count that as 13 hours since it was about an hour before I went in that the pain was really intense. They sent me home at 10 am or so at 2 cm.

With Caroleigh I had been having prodromal labor every night for 2 weeks. The night she was born started the same way with contractions starting at 11 pm and she was born at 3:04 am, so about 4 hours. I went in with her because I thought I was leaking fluid. If I had waited until it was really intense she would have been born at home or in the car.

With Evie. Argh. I still think about her birth every night before I go to bed and all the mistakes I made. I went to the hospital at about 10 pm, they admitted me around 1 am. The doctor ruptured my membranes at 11 am. I was not in a good pattern at all, the contractions stopped after breaking my water. The 'real' labor started at about 2:30 pm. She was born at 6:25, so 'real' labor was about 4 hours.

Good question lol. I woke up with contractions at around 3am I think (gosh I've already forgotten times lol) and managed to sleep between them till 5am... still wasn't sure I was in labor till 6ish, DH made me (us) go to the midwife after that so I guess I decided I was in labor between 6am-7am and he was born at 8:30am. 5-8:30 is all I consider "labor" since I slept through most of the early stuff.

When I say my labor was "x" hours long (or in one case, minutes), I begin counting the time from when the contractions get to the point of not being able to walk/talk through them.

Interesting LOL. Hmmm... Ive always said my first was about 16 hours and Emme was about 14 hours but I was fine up until about an hour before. I didnt really have to concentrate through the contractions or anything. Actually I was quite bored. I wonder what it will be like this time. It is interesting that almost all of you had strong obvious contractions at a certain point. Maybe Emme wasnt in a good position?

With Owen I would say my labor started for real when Leila nursed around maybe 2-4 PMish. My water had broke at 7:48 am and he was born at 10:15 PM. All the time before then I was still able to talk and even somewhat walk during the contractions.

With Leila I was induced so it is harder to say.

Huh. I usually say my labor was 9 hours (and then 6-9 pushing). I count my labor from 6 PM, when I realized that it was really labor because the contractions were kind of strong and didn't go away when I was up and walking around. Called the midwives and was only a 2 then, and an hour later - definitely not too hard to talk or walk.

Contractions were too hard to walk or talk through at 11 maybe and I got in the tub at 12 even though I hadn't been checked. Midwives got back at 2 am and I was an 8! Complete at 3.

So if you go by active labor, my labor was only 4 hours! (Followed by NINE hours of pushing - 6 at home and 3 during/after transfer).

But it was so hard to tell because my labor was so NOT textbook. Contractions 45-60 seconds long, one minute apart from start of labor to end, often double, and sometimes triple peaking. Weird for sure. Makes me wonder if the next one will be similar.
