Scientology's recipe for baby malnutrition, and quite possibly, infant botulism

Scientology's Volunteer Minister's Handbook:
Breast feeding babies may have a nostalgic background, particularly to a Freudian oriented medico, but real breast milk again is usually a poor ration. Modern mothers smoke and sometimes drink. Smoking makes the milk very musty. Anyway, a nervous modern mother just can't deliver the right ration. Maybe it's the pace of the times or the breed, but there are few modern Guernsey-type mothers. So even without drinking or smoking, one should forget breast feeding.
...
The foremost reason a baby doesn't do well is poor rations. And to remedy that, here is a formula one can use: 15 ounces of barley water
10 ounces of homogenized milk
3 ounces of corn syrup (As the Romans had honey, 2 ounces of honey may be used instead of corn syrup, if desired. Do not use lactose [a sugar found in milk, used in infant foods] as a substitute.) The amount of syrup should be varied - depending on the baby - some like it weak - some take it stronger.
I am not here to pick on people and their religious preference... but I found this article or website on scientology and breastfeeding... this was very offensive to me for some reason... If someone here is into scientology please explain to me the reason for not BFing?

as far as I can tell, Scientology seems to be very centered around control, especially of women. The whole silent birth thing....I don't know. I guess my knowledge of it is limited to heresay, so I probably don't know what I'm talking about.

sounds like a bunch of crap to me. Who smokes and breastfeeds? Seriously?

I don't have anything nice to say about Scientology or their stance on breastfeeding so I'm gonna keep my mouth shut.

This reminds me of the article I read about a year ago where someone was saying that women shouldn't breastfeed because we ingest too much toxic material over our life time. They said that it would be released in our breastmilk, so we should formula feed instead.

Neither that theory or this one makes sense. So, instead of giving my child the milk that my body has produced FOR HIM, I should make or buy formula that is based on milk produced FOR another animal. Hmmmm. Okay.

That is just crazy.

And about the breastfeeding and smoking - been there. And my baby(s) thrived more than any formula fed baby I've seen.

From KellyMom:

"Should a mother who smokes cigarettes breastfeed?

First of all, a mom who can't stop smoking should breastfeed. Breastfeeding provides many immunities that help your baby fight illness and can even help counteract some of the effects of cigarette smoke on your baby: for example, breastfeeding has been shown to decrease the negative effects of cigarette smoke on a baby's lungs. It's definitely better if breastfeeding moms not smoke, but if you can't stop or cut down, then it is better to smoke and breastfeed than to smoke and formula feed. "

Now obviously I never smoked a cigarette DURING a nursing session and definitely think that would be beyond stupid. But just wanted to state that even for smoking mothers - breastfeeding is Still best.

Wow....I find that article really offensive too. Wonder how many moms actually make that formula.

That being noted.... and aside from the Scientology part of this... if for some reason I were unable to BF (and couldn't get donor milk), I would make a homemade formula from goat's milk and raw almonds... but that's just me I have a recipe for it... there's more to it than that, but those are the main components.

People are weird thats all i can say lol....

as for the smoking and breastfeeding thing, i smoke but that is why i supplement. I nurse my son when i haven't smoked for over 2 hours or longer. Everything i read says if you smoke and breastfeed to wait 95 min before feeding and i always make sure i wait the time frame. So if he is hungry during that time frame i give him formula, since i'm not able to pump out more than an oz when i try.

No doubt I'd mix something up or just use organic formula if I COULDN'T breastfeed, but I definitely wouldn't just not breastfeed from the get go because someone essentially said that I'm a toxic, nervous-nelly "modern" woman.
People never cease to amaze me!

Oh-I totally agree! Even a smoking, breastfeeding mom is providing better than any smoking mom giving something other than BM.
