I'm watching Discovery Health. Dangerous, I know...

This doctor was kind of talking badly about this mom who's laboring naturally and is declining interventions.

He was saying, "well, people don't go to the dentist and have the dentist drilling in their mouth without Novocaine because it's more natural, and this is the same deal. Not having medicines doesn't make it more natural. There's no reason to be in pain."

Seriously? It doesn't make it more natural? And someone tell me... at what point will my teeth just remove themselves out of my head should I decide to have no intervention?

anyone?

Well, I get my teeth drilled without novacaine, so to me it is all natural

This is why I can't watch those shows anymore. Glad he's not my doctor!

He was referring to a root canal. I don't think there's a person alive that would do that without meds. At least I know I wouldn't.

The point is-adult teeth don't just burrow their way out of your mouth when they're ready... our gums don't contract and just... "have a tooth." Our bodies contract and have babies. His analogy was asinine.

Crazy! I think my dentist is more NCB friendly than that one is because he doesn't even routinely give Novocaine unless you ask.

I hate that analogy. Getting your teeth worked on is nothing like giving birth. I don't worry about the medicine being bad for my teeth, but the medicine being bad for my baby is a whole different thing.

Ditto!

Oh my goodness, some of you do not get numbed before fillings? I am terrified of the dentist, I would rather give birth 10 times naturally than get one filling WITH Novocaine! LOL

that really seems to be an analogy people love to throw around the most, at least he could have been more original! Sheesh.

I hear that analogy WAY too often and it makes NO sense to me!! A woman's body is designed to give birth. Nature has equipped us for that purpose with natural hormones to help it progress and to help deal with pain. Nature did NOT intend for us to have our teeth drilled, pulled or otherwise messed with. We do not have hormones that are emmited when that happens. It's completely different! Not to mention that with birth you are talking about involving a baby in the whole medication process.

Of course there are women for whom the natural processes just don't work or don't work well enough and need interventions. But that analogy is just asinine!

I usually have to change the channel when it starts heading in that direction. I happened to have one of those baby shows on in the background while my mom was helping with a sewing project. I started yelling at the tv and she was like "Maybe you shouldn't watch this if you're going to get so worked up?"
