I fail. Levi's cord was cut before he was even out of me. I didn't ask why... I just know she wouldn't have done it unless she thought she had to.

I have a random question... maybe someone knows. "Back in the day", before they had clamp cords and all that jazz, how did they treat the cord and the placenta? Did they separate them from the baby or did they just fall off? Might be a silly question, but this was bothering me last night .

i know lotus birth was present back in the day...where they kept the cord and placenta attached to the baby till it fell off...i don't know if everyone did it that way though.

I dunno! I bet they cut it with something or at least tied it off. I'm assuming the current practice came from somewhere. But I do know that in some cultures women carry their placentas around with the babies until it falls off. My old Bradley teacher who was also a midwife told me they even had little sacks or backpacks they used for this purpose! Crazy, huh?

^^ Woah! A placenta bag?! Now that would turn some heads nowadays. I should do this for my MIL... that'd keep her away from me after the baby comes.

LOL! Too funny!!!

Great article! Thanks for sharing!! My mom didn't even know that delayed cord cutting was an option. She told me she was surprised and even concerned that my midwife waited so long to clamp and cut Kendra's cord. She had no idea the benefits that comes from waiting.
