I'm a little confused about my appt today. I've had my cervix checked at every appt for a while d/t PTL. They have always been painless checks. Today, she puts her hand up, looks like she can't reach it, then she says "sorry", and really reaches and then i feel really painful stretching. She told me to expect some bleeding, and that was that. I didn't have any bleeding, but i didn't contract a bit afterwards.

Any idea what was going on that made me experience so different today?

I'm no expert but sounds like she did a stretch and sweep, but again I'm just going by what I have read.

I also think she swept your membranes without your consent. I'd point blank ask her if she did it. I'd be LIVID!!!!!!! I'm sorry it hurt hun!

If she had asked, i would have given my consent.... i'm just wondering why she didn't tell me what she was doing. We had been discussing how "done" i felt. Maybe she thought i was asking for "assistance"? Not sure that's actually what occured though. I never bled, and i'm not contracting. She told me I was "a good 1cm" can you do a sweep with that little?

I don't know. Maybe to be off the record? 37 weeks is full term but I think it's still pretty early to have a baby. It's possible that for most cases, sweepage won't work until your body is ready to go in to labor. But since you have had some PTL, it could trigger things anyway. Maybe she was trying to do you a favor since you're ready to be done anyway, but doesn't want to be held accountable if baby isn't quite ready? I dunno. I forget, are you using a conventional OBGYN or a midwife?

there is nothing that can be done, unfortunately in this case- basically consenting to an internal basically consents to what ever may happen when they are in there. Not that I think it's right, but unfortunately that is the way it is

she is a regular OB. I planned on maybe asking her about a sweep... maybe at 39 weeks? I didn't think they would do it this early. Course don't know if thats what she did. I'm not mad, just annoyed with myself for not asking more questions. I always wonder about things after the fact.

Definitely sounds like a stretch & sweep. I didn't bleed after my first one either. Luckily, if baby isn't ready to come it probably won't send you into labor. I've known women that have had 2 or 3 and still got induced at 42 weeks, so it's not a sure thing.

Kinda strange. Don't be mad at yourself - it's hard to think in doctor's offices - especially if something hurts! (((hugs)))

My OB has a reputation for sneaking and hitting you with a S&S without consent. I ended up having it done and was totally caught off guard. I would have consented anyways, but I just wasnt expecting it yet. I was bleeding pretty good before I even left the office.

I've had checks that were easy & didn't hurt, but then I've had ones that really do. It was like that with Avery, I had a Dr check me at 38 weeks & it didn't hurt at all (I was 2-3 cm) then the same Dr at 39 weeks (4 cm) & it really hurt! I know he didn't do a S&S because he had told me the week before he wouldn't do one because I was strep B+ & it could break my water. Sorry it hurt; if you have the same Dr at your next appt, I'd ask why it hurt when the others didn't.

It does sound like what everyone else is saying, sorry it hurt! I had it done 3 times with my son and finally the 3rd time i went into labor a few days after and im not even sure it was becuase of the sweep, but good thing is they don't always work. I would be mad that she didnt' ask you, my midwife asked me and we discussed it first
