As for when to call your inlaws and leave for the hospital, that's a really hard one. Lots of people follow the 5-1-1 rule, where contractions are 5 minutes apart, lasting one minute each, for at least an hour. Personally though, my contractions were always closer together from almost the start, so I would go by the 2-1-1 or so rule. Others say that if you can't talk through contractions then go in, but again that's subjective.
Would your inlaws be willing to just come up whenever labor starts for you and hang out? That way you know that they'd be there with your kids, but you could leave for the hospital if things went faster, etc.
